Mary Ellen Smith was born at New Bedford, Massachusetts, about 1857, to Elisha G. Smith and Mary S. Sherman.

William F. Maxfield was called a jeweler in his marriage record (1878), the 1880 census, and the birth record of a child (1885). He was called a silversmith in the 1920 census. He lived in Barrington.

The 1880 census (1209:3A) reported William W. Maxfield, who worked in a jewelry shop, age 24, and his wife, Mary E. Maxfield, 22, living at Barrington.

Mary Ellen Smith Maxfield died some time before 1920, as the census that year (1670:10B) reported William Maxfield, widower, living on County Road, Barrington:
