Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

AMOS5 MAXFIELD (Robert4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, District of Maine, on 22 October 1795[1] a son of Robert Carr Maxfield and his wife Tabitha Clough. He died at Randolph, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, on 30 September 1860.[2] He first married probably sometime before 1816 JOHANNA FAUNCE. She was born at Bethel, Cumberland County, on 1795, and died at Randolph on 25 December 1857.[3] Amos then married ELEANOR (ASH) BOUCHER at Stoughton, Norfolk County, on 13 January 1859.[4] She was born at Sullivan, Hancock County, District of Maine, about 1814-5.[5]

Amos Maxfield grew up at North Yarmouth, where he was reported in the 1820 census, engaged in manufacturing, in a household of one male and one female, both between the ages of 16 and 25.[6] Their daughter Susan, age about 3, was living with Amos' father at that time.

The 1830 census reported the family at Portland, Cumberland County, consisting of a couple in their 30s, a young man in his 20s, and a girl between 5 and 9.[7] I cannot identify the young man. The girl was either their daughter Mary or Susan.

The 1840 census reported Amos and Joanna Maxfield as heads each of their own household, listed next to each other. Whether they were estranged, or listed separately because Amos was at sea, I do not know. Amos Maxfield was a household of one, a male in his 40s, engaged in ocean navigation. Joanna had a household of two females, a woman in her 40s, and a girl between 10 and 14.[8] The later could be an under-estimation of the age of a daughter.

The 1850 census reported Amos Maxfield, 53, mariner, under New London, New London County, Connecticut, with the crew of the bark Dove. which had embarked for the Pacific Ocean on 13 August 1849.[9] Johanna, recorded in the census as "Joanna Maxwell," was living at Randolph with her daughter Susan, 25, and Susan's husband, Burton Howard, a 27 year old boot maker.[10]

Joanna Maxfield died at Randolph on 22 December 1857, from influenza. The record indicated that she was the wife of Amos Maxfield.[11]

Amos Maxfield of Randolph, 62, sailor, married Eleanor Ash, 44, of Stoughton, on 13 January 1859. This was the second marriage for both. Rev. George Winchester, Universalist clergyman, performed the ceremony. Eleanor's parents were Benjamin and Betsey.[12] One might think from this record that "Ash" was Eleanor's married name; however that is not the case. Maine vital records indicate that Arthur Boucher of Sullivan and Ellenor Ash of Gouldsboro, Hancock County, married at South Berwick, York County, Maine, on 28 April 1831. The 1830 census reported a Benjamin Ash household at Gouldsboro with a female between 15 and 19. The 1840 census reported an Arthur Boucher household at Sullivan. It reported a female between 15 and 19, which would appear to be an error.[13]

The 1860 census, taken on 1 June, reported Amos and Eleanor Maxfield at Randolph. It gave both their ages as 64, both born at Maine, he a farm laborer.[14] Her age on this record is not consistent with the marriage record. Amos Maxfield died on 30 September of that year, age 65, of a bowel complaint.[15]

Amos Maxfield and his first wife Johanna Faunce had at least the following children:

  1. SUSAN LUFKIN6 MAXFIELD b. at Maine about 1816-7 according to her grandfather's pension record, but about 1824-5 according to the 1850 census and grave marker;[16] d. at Holbrook, Norfolk County, on 26 October 1867;[17] m. bet. 4 April 1849 (death of husband's first wife) and 1 June 1850 (date of census) BARTON HOWARD, b. at Randolph on 21 February 1823 d. at Holbrook on 19 April 1899, child of Gideon Howard. Barton Howard had m. (1) ELVIRA HAYDEN b. at Randolph on 4 March 1825, d. at Randolph on 4 April 1849; he m.(3) at Randolph on 6 March 1869 MELINDA HANNAH WEST.[18]
  2. MARY COOK6 MAXFIELD b. at Poland, Oxford County, Maine, on 17 November 1823;[19] I have no further record.
