Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

JONATHAN5 MAXFIELD (Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 19 February 1773[1] a son of Edmund Maxfield and his wife Rachel Russell. He died sometime before his father wrote his will in 1818. He married at Dartmouth on 10 February 1799 SYLVIA SHERMAN.[2] She was born on 1778 and died on 1821.[3]

I find very little information on Jonathan Maxfield. His son was born in January of 1801. On 11 May of that year Jonathan purchased 16 rods of land at Dartmouth, bounded by a river, saw mill, and highway, from Benjamin Cummings of Dartmouth, for $425. He was described as a "mariner."[4] His father's will of 6 August 1818 refered to him as deceased, with one child living, Prince Maxfield. So he died sometime between 1801 and 1818.

Neither Jonathan nor Sylvia Maxfield appear as head of household in the 1800 or 1810 census. The "widow Maxfield" entries are otherwise accounted for. Sylvia Maxfield appeared in the 1820 census at Dartmouth. The household consisted of a female over 45 (Sylvia was 42), and a male 16-25 (Prince was 19). The household was engaged in agriculture.[5] Sylvia Maxfield died in 1821, according to the grave marker at South Dartmouth Cemetery.[6]

Their son, Prince Sherman Maxfield, married twice and farmed in Dartmouth. He died before his widow's next marriage on 1 June 1846. The Prince Sherman household was reported in the 1830 and 1840 censuses at Dartmouth. In 1830 the household consisted of a male and female in their 20s, and two otherwise unidentified children, a male 5-9 and a female 0-4.[7] In 1840 the household consisted of a male and female in their 30s, a male in his 20s, and a female 10-14.[8]

Jonathan Maxfield and his wife Sylvia Sherman had the following child:

  1. PRINCE SHERMAN6 MAXFIELD b. at Dartmouth on 10 January 1801;[9] d. before 1 June 1846 (his widow's remarriage); m. (1) at Dartmouth on 2 July 1820 ALICE SANFORD,[10] b. at Dartmouth on 20 January 1804,[11] d. before 1842 (husband's next marriage), child of Isaac and Phebe Sanford; Prince m. (2) at Dartmouth on 20 February 1842 MARY ANN TRIPP[12] b. at Westport, Bristol County, on 5 September 1814,[13] d. at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 10 April 1892,[14] child of Howard and Thankfull Tripp. This was Mary Ann Tripp's second marriage also. She had m. (1) at Dartmouth on 5 October 1832 WILSON BARSTOW PARLOW[15] b. at Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 2 September 1803,[16] d. at Rochester on 27 February 1839;[17] Mary Ann m. (3) at New Bedford on 1 June 1846 IRAM HAYWARD[18] b. at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, on 12 November 1801,[19] d. at New Bedford on 18 February 1886.[20]
