JONATHAN5 MAXFIELD (Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 19 February 1773[1] a son of Edmund Maxfield and his wife Rachel Russell. He died sometime before his father wrote his will in 1818. He married at Dartmouth on 10 February 1799 SYLVIA SHERMAN.[2] She was born on 1778 and died on 1821.[3]
I find very little information on Jonathan Maxfield. His son was born in January of 1801. On 11 May of that year Jonathan purchased 16 rods of land at Dartmouth, bounded by a river, saw mill, and highway, from Benjamin Cummings of Dartmouth, for $425. He was described as a "mariner."[4] His father's will of 6 August 1818 refered to him as deceased, with one child living, Prince Maxfield. So he died sometime between 1801 and 1818.
Neither Jonathan nor Sylvia Maxfield appear as head of household in the 1800 or 1810 census. The "widow Maxfield" entries are otherwise accounted for. Sylvia Maxfield appeared in the 1820 census at Dartmouth. The household consisted of a female over 45 (Sylvia was 42), and a male 16-25 (Prince was 19). The household was engaged in agriculture.[5] Sylvia Maxfield died in 1821, according to the grave marker at South Dartmouth Cemetery.[6]
Their son, Prince Sherman Maxfield, married twice and farmed in Dartmouth. He died before his widow's next marriage on 1 June 1846. The Prince Sherman household was reported in the 1830 and 1840 censuses at Dartmouth. In 1830 the household consisted of a male and female in their 20s, and two otherwise unidentified children, a male 5-9 and a female 0-4.[7] In 1840 the household consisted of a male and female in their 30s, a male in his 20s, and a female 10-14.[8]
