JACOB5 MAXFIELD (David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born probably at New Hampshire, say about 1770 a son of David Maxfield and his wife Judith Clough. He died between 24 August 1823 (will) and 23 October 1823 (probate). He married at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, on 20 December 1809 SUSANNAH PRATT.[1] She was born between 1770 and 1775, and was still living at the time of the 1830 census.
Jacob Maxfield's age in the 1810 census placed his birth between 1765 and 1784. The 1820 census placed him before 1775. Together, these censuses placed his birth between 1765 and 1775. Considering his place in the birth order given in Frederick Gilmore Maxfield's Family Tree, and the probable birth dates of his siblings, 1770 is a good guess for his birth year. At that time his parents were residents of Wentworth, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Based on the age groupings in census records, Susannah (Pratt) Maxfield was born between 1765 and 1784 in the 1810 census, before 1775 in the 1820 census, and between 1770 and 1780 in the 1830 census. Collectively they place her birth between 1770 and 1775.
Jacob Maxfield participated in several property transactions at Georgia, all before his marriage:
Jacob Maxfield and Susannah Pratt were married at Georgia on 20 December 1809, by Joel Barber, Jr., Justice of the Peace.[6] By that time they already had two children.
Censuses reported the Jacob Maxfield household at Milton in 1810, 1820, and 1830. The information from those censuses can be explained as follows:[7]

The main problem with these designations is the age of Lucy, whose age two census takers may have underestimated, or perhaps she misled them.
Jacob died probably at Milton between 24 August and 23 October 1823. His will of the former date, presented to court by his widow on the latter date, is transcribed in full below.[8]
In the name of God. Amen. I Jacob Maxfield of Milton, County of Chittenden in the State of Vermont being sick in body, but of sound mind memory and understanding (praise be God for it), and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end that I may be the better prepared to have the departure whensoever it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner following, that is to say: |
