Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

JACOB5 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Sandwich, Strafford County, New Hampshire,, on 20 March 1772[1] a son of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Lydia Jones. He died at Sandwich about 21 August 1833.[2] He married at Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 5 December 1802 RACHEL GRIFFIN,[3] who was born probably some time between 1765 and 1784.

The fifth of nine children, Jacob grew up in Sandwich. However his father, a Free Will Baptist preacher, traveled in Vermont, and the family had some ties to Sutton, Caledonia County, Vermont. Jacob took the Oath of Affirmation and Allegiance there on 4 July 1794.[4]

The 1810 census reported the Jacob Maxfield family at Sandwich, consisting of a woman over 44, a man between 26 and 44, a woman between 26 and 44, three girls between 10 and 15, and a boy and two girls under 10.[5] The only two persons I can potentially identify are Jacob, 38, and Rachel, probably between 26 and 44. I have not found Jacob Maxfield listed as a head of household in either the 1820 or 1830 census.

Jacob Maxfield may have fought in the War of 1812.[6]

Jacob Maxfield took his life, as described in the Independent Statesman on 21 September 1833:[7]

Suicide -
The body of Mr. Jacob Maxfield of Sandwich was found on the 28th ult. suspended from a tree in a piece of woods near his house. He had been absent from his house a week, as was supposed, to visit some of his connexions, who dwelt in a neighboring town, when he was found in this melancholy situation; and from the appearance of his body, he hung himself immediately after his departure from his house. Mr. Maxfield was about 50 years of age, and a sober, industrious and honest man. His loss will not only be deeply lamented by his relations, but by all who knew him. - No cause can be assigned for the shocking deed.

Jacob Maxfield and his wife Rachel Griffin had the following children, perhaps others:

  1. JOSIAH6 MAXFIELD b. at Sandwich on 9 July 1812.
  2. perhaps LUCIEN6 MAXFIELD
  3. THOMAS6 MAXFIELD b. at Sandwich on 21 September 1820.
