RUSSEL TUBBS5 MAXFIELD (Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Fishersfield, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 10 April 1816[1] a son of Currier Maxfield and his wife Mary Carr. He died at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 19 March 1882.[2] He married about 1837 (their first child was born 1838) MARY E. CUTTS. She was born at Orange, Orange County, Vermont, on 27 May 1817, a daughter of William Cutts and Olive Dame. She died at Goshen on 16 December 1889.[3]
Although many documents spell his first name with the conventional spelling, "Russell," he signed his names to deeds with one "L" and insisted on that spelling. Great-grandson Dean Mullavey wrote in 2000:[4]
Great grandfather was supposed to have spelled his name with just one "L." RUSSEL instead of RUSSELL. His death record as filed with the New Hampshire department of Vital Statistics lists the spelling as RUSSEL, yet it appears as RUSSELL twice on the gravestone in the North Goshen Cemetery! His daughter Alice, my grandmother was quite adamant with the one "L" version.
Russel Maxfield spent his early years in Fishersfield, name later changed to Newbury. However, by the age of seven his family had moved to Goshen. Rusel lived in Goshen the rest of his life, raised a family there, and farmed there, in proximity to much of his extended family.
Russel Maxfield participated in some property transactions in Sullivan County:
The 1840 Census reported the Russell Maxfield family at Goshen, consisting of a man and a woman in their 20s (Russel, 24, Mary, 23), and a girl under 5[8] (Melissa, 2).
The family was reported in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses at Goshen, containing the following persons and ages:[9]

Melissa had married in 1860, about four months before the census. Harriet was also reported in 1860 at Newport, Sullivan County, age 20, a factory operative, living in a factory boarding house.[10] Before the 1870 census, Belinda had died (1864), and Emily, Joel and Harriet had married (1863, 1867, before 1868 respectively). Alvah had also recently married, but remained in the household with his new wife. By 1880 Edwin had moved to Minnesota, and Eugenia had married (1873). Alvah died in 1877 and his widow remained in the household. Melissa's husband died in 1875, and her twin sons were being cared for in her parents' household. Some of the family was reported in 1880 at 27 Newhall Street, Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.[11] Keep in mind that Melissa and Alvah married siblings.

Four other unrelated persons were also living in this household. Melissa (Maxfield) Hussey, widow, evidently maintained a small boarding house in Lynn. Her elder son was with her while the twins stayed with her parents. Her double sister-in-law (her husband's sister and her brother's wife) Maria Maxfield was reported here, working at Lynn, as well as with her in-laws in New Hampshire. Melissa's sister, Harriet (Maxfield) Ingram, happened to be visiting with her son when the census taker arrived.
Russel Tubbs Maxfield died at Goshen on 19 March 1882 from anemia caused by lead poisoning.[12] He did not leave a will; at the request of his widow, their son Joel was appointed administrator of the estate.[13] Widow Mary Maxfield died at Goshen on 16 December 1889 from heart failure.[14]
Russel and Mary Maxfield had eleven children, nine of whom married and established their own families. Belinda died at the age of fourteen. Elmer George Maxfield lived to the age of 74 but never married. He generally lived with siblings, reported in the 1900 and 1910 censuses with his brother Edwin, and in 1920 with Edwin's widow, Mary. In 1930 he was reported with his nephew (son of Edwin) Fred Maxfield.
Russel Tubbs Maxfield and his wife Mary Cutts had the following children:
