Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JAMES6 MAXFIELD (James5, John4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at Chichester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 5 June 1806[1] a son of James French Maxfield and his wife Rachel Blake. He died on 23 February 1898.[2] He published intentions to marry first at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 14 November 1835 EMILY KENNY or KINNEY.[3] She was born at Salem about 1813, a daughter of Ebenezer and M. Kenny. She died at Salem on 15 April 1851.[4] He married second at Hookset, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 29 December 1852 MARY JANE JOHNSON.[5] She was born at Pittsfield, Merrimack County, on 29 June 1828, a daughter of John Johnson and Judith Joy. She died at Pittsfield on 26 August 1918.[6]

James Maxfield grew up at Chichester, the third of eight children. His father was a prominent figure, often called a "Gentleman" on land transactions. As a young adult, James moved to Salem, Massachusetts, where he worked as a tanner all his life.

When James and Emily married he was 29, she 22. They had fifteen years of marriage before her death from dropsey. In their first three years of marriage Emily had two children, then no more. The 1840 census reported families with the number of persons in different age and sex categories. It reported the J. Maxfield family at Salem, with the following composition;[7] I have indicated a possible explanatian of their identities.

malw 30-39 James, 33
female 20-29 Emily, 27
male 10-15 unidentified
male 5-9 Jewett, 8
female 0-4 Emily, 4
male 0-4 James, 2

James' orphaned nephew, Jewett, was with the family in 1850, so I speculate he could have been with the family in 1840. The 1850 census reported a family consisting of James, 45, Emily, 37, daughter Emily, 14, son James, 13, and nephew Jewett, 18.[8]

Emily died in 1851, leaving James of widower aged 44 with children aged 14 and 13. Twenty months after Emily's death, James, aged 46, married Mary Jane Johnson, aged 24. The 1855 state census reported a family consisting of James, 49, Mary, 26, Emily, 19, and James, Jr., 17.[9]

The 1860 census reported James Maxfield, 54, Mary, 32, Emily, 24, James, Jr., 22, and four boarders. The younger James worked as a currier, Emily as a shoe binder; the four boarders were all tanners.[10] One of the boarders, Charles Tanner, aged 32, married Emily in 1861. James Maxfield, Jr., served in the Army during the Civil War, from 16 April 1861 to 31 July 1861. He served in Company A (Mechanics Light Infantry), 5th regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia.[11] The following year he married Mary Lassan. The marriage evidently did not last long. The 1865 state census reported James Maxfield, Jr., 27, married, occupation driver, living with his father, James, 58, his step-mother, Mary, 36, and his half-sister Mary, 3.[12] Mary W. Lassen, listed as age 26 and single, was living at Salem with her parents, Peter Lassen, a native of Denmark, mariner, 53, and Hannah, 55, and her sister Rebecca, 23.[13]

James Maxfield, Jr., died at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1873. The death record called him single, a janitor, dying from inflamation of the bowels.[14] The 1880 census reported Mary Maxfield (Mary Lassan) living woth her parents at Salem. She was classified as a widow and working in a shoe factory.[15] On 11 March 1886 she married at Salem, George E. Wiggin.[16] George later married, at Barnstead Belknap County, New Hampshire, on 6 June 1901, Lizzie M. Nutter.[17] It is not clear from the record if his first wife Mary had died or if they were divorced.

The 1870 census reported James Maxfield, 64, Mary, 40, and daughter Mary, 9, living at Salem with three boarders, all curriers.[18]

Daughter Mary, age 17, married John W. Lewis, age 25, in 1879. The 1880 census reported her and her new husband living with her parents. According to that record the family lived at 31 Boston Road, Salem, and consisted of Jems, 73, no longer working, wife Mary J., 51, daughter Mary J. Lewis, 18, son-in-law John W. Lewis, 26, working in a fish market, and three boarders, all working in shoe shops.[19]

At some point after 1880 James and Mary moved in different directions. The next record we have of James places him in Pennsylvania with his daughter Emily Morgan, and the next record we have of Mary places her in New Hampshire with her daughter Mary Lewis.

The 1870 census reported Charles and Emily Morgan at Salem, with three children. The family consisted of Charles, 39, engineer, Emily 34, Emma, 17, Ruth E., 14, and Charles, 8.[20] Emily and Ruth may have been children of Charles Morgan from an earlier marriage. Their births preceeded the marriage of Charles and Emily by several years, and the number of children to whom Emily gave birth, as reported in the 1900 census, does not include these older girls.

The 1880 census reported the Charles Morgan family at New Milford, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, where Charles was employed as an engineer for a tannery. New Milford was a small community in the mountains of northeast Pennsylvania, which in 1880 had a population of 803. The family consisted of Charles W. Morgan, 49, Emily (Maxfield) Morgan, 44, and youngest child Edward Francis Morgan, 9.[21] James Maxfield died in 1898, age 91, and was buried at New Milford. The 1900 census reported Charles W. Morgan, 69, engineer for a tannery, living at New Milford with his wife, Emily, 64, and thier single son, Edward, 29, a teacher.[22] Son Charles Morgan resided in 1900 in New Milford township, Susquehanna County, where he operated a rented farm, with his wife Sarah and their daughter Emma.[23] Emily (Maxfield) Morgan died at New Milford in 1901, her husband Charles died there in 1907. Their graves may be found at New Milford Cemetery.[24]
