Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JOHN A.6 MAXFIELD (Enoch5, John4m Michael3, John2-1) was born at Gilmanton, Belknap County, New Hampshire, on 14 January 1840 a son of Enoch Maxfield and his wife Sarah Thompson . He died at Gilmanton on 28 April 1902.[1] He married at Wentworth, Grafton Couty, New Hampshire, on 31 August 1862 APHIA H. PAGE.[2] She was born at Wentworth on 4 May 1843, a daughter of Zebina Page and Betsey Merrill. She died at Farmington, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 21 September 1899.[3]

John A. Maxfield, the ninth of eleven children, grew up on the family fsrm in Gilmanton.

Although married in Aphia's home town of Wentworth, John and Aphia lived at Gilmanton, Lower Gilmanton Post Office, where he farmed and they raised a family. The 1870 census reported the fmaily at Gilmanton, consisting of John A., 29, Apphia, 26, and daughters Addie and Etta, both reported as age 4. John was reported working on a farm, and had a personal estate of $1200.[4]

The 1880 census reported the complete family at Gilmanton:[5]

The children married as they approached adulthood, Addie in 1881, Etta in 1883, and Lewis Albert, always called "Bert," about 1894-5. Apphia died of typhoid fever ath the age of 57.[6]

Daughter Hattie married Charles W. Ordway in 1900. Although John A. Maxfield in his will of 1898 referred to her as Hattie F. Canney, I find no record of a marriage of Hattie to a Canney, and her marriage record to Charles Ordway states that is her first marriage.

John A. Maxfield wrote his will on 18 March 1898, while his wife was still living. He left the following legacies:

John A. Maxfield died on 28 April 1902, at the age of 62, from heart failure.[8] His will was presented to probate court on 20 May of that year.[9]

Bert and Ethel Maxfield were reported in the 1900 and 1910 censuses at Gilmanton, a childless couple. Bert was a farmer.[10] After 1910 I have found no further record of Ethel. In 1920 Bert A. Maxfield was reported a farmer, age 48, at Gilmanton. With his was Christine M. Long, 35, servant. Bert and Christine were both listed as married.[11] The 1930 census reported Bert A. Maxfield, 58, no occupation, at Belmont, Belknap County. With him was Christine M. Long, 42, housekeeper. Bert was listed as single, Christine as divorced.[12] Bert died at Gilmanton in 1936, his cause of death was listed as senility.[13]
