EDWIN L.6 MAXFIELD (Obadiah5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New York on 1814, a child of Obadiah Maxfield and his wife Eunice.[1] He died at Tallmadge, Ottawa County, Michigan, on 19 November 1894.[2] He married first MELISSA ________, who died at Clinton County, New York, on 6 August 1840.[3] He married second by 1842 (birth of a child) CYNTHIA ANN CALKINS, who was born at New York on 13 September 1816, a child of Asa Calkins, and died at Muskegon, Muskegon County, Michigan, on 8 August 1906.[4]
The census record of 1840 reported the Edwin Maxfield family at Chazy, Clinton County, consisting of a male and a female in their 20s and a male under five.[5] This suggests a married couple and a small child. Edwin's wife, Melissa, died two months after the census date. I do not know what happened to the small child.
Edwin Maxfield married his second wife, Cynthia, prabably before the birth of their child, Hiram, in April 1842. Hiram died five months later. They had another child, born at New York, on 6 June 1845, and an additional child, born at Michigan on 29 August 1856. So the Edwin Maxfield family migrated west between those two dates.
From 1850[6] through 1880 each federal census reported this family at Tallmadge, and Edwin's occupation was farmer. The 1860 census reported the family at Lamont Post Office as follows:[7]
Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace | Other |
Edwin Maxfield | 46 | M | farmer | $600 | $300 | VT
Cynthia A. Maxfield | 44 | F | wife | NY
Esther A. Maxfield | 15 | F | NY | school
Mary W. Maxfield | 13 | F | MI | school
Lucinda Maxfield | 9 | F | MI | school
Ira Maxfield | 5 | M | MI | school |
In 1870 the younger two children were still at home.[8] In 1880 only Ira was still at home, and he was working on the farm.[9]
Edwin Maxfield died in 1894. Cynthia Ann continued to live at Tallmadge Township, listed in the 1900 census as living with her son Ira, a bachelor farmer. According to that record, Cynthia had six children, four of whom were still living.[10] Cynthia died in 1906 from "general exhaustion."
Edwin L. Maxfield and his second wife Cynthia Ann Calkins had the following children:
