NATHANIEL6 MAXFIELD (Stephen54321) was born ar Loudon, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 13 January 1797 a son of Stephen Maxfield and his wife Hannah Moody. He died at Loudon on 1 April 1859.[1] He married at Loudon on 10 May 1826 BETSEY STEVENS.[2] She was born at New Hampshire about 1796, a daughter of Thomas Stevens. She died on 8 October 1875.[3]
Nathaniel was a farmer. He and Betsey lived most of their lives in Loudon, which in 1823 became part of Merrimack County, New Hampshire.
The 1830 Census reported this family at Canterbury, Merrimack County, consisting of a couple in their 30s (Nathaniel 33, Betsey 34) and a female under 5 (Hannah 3).[4]
The 1840 Census reported them at Loudon, 2 persons engaged in agriculture, the family consisting of a couple in their 40s (Nathaniel 43, Betsey 44), a girl 10-14 (Hannah 13) and a boy 5-9 (Stephen 9).[5] They had a son, Charles, in 1832, but their is no further record of him; he probably died before the 1840 Census.
The 1850 Census reported the family at Loudon:[6]

Nathaniel Maxfield died in 1859 from disease of the kidney or consumption.[7]
The 1860 Census reported widow Betsey Maxfield living with her daughter Hannah and her family at Loudon, Loudon Mills Post Office, as follows:[8]

Son Stephen Maxfield, 27, shoemaker, lived in the household of John anmd Polly Carter, which immediately preceded the Sears household.[9]
Son Stephen Maxfield fought in the Civil War, in Company F, New Hampshire 5th Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 1 October 1861 and was mustered out at Point Lookout, Maryland, on 27 November 1863.[10]
The 1870 Census found Betsey Maxfield still living in the Sears household, with the same composition.[11] Betsey died in 1875.
A Stephen M. Maxfield, who could be the son of this family, was reported in the 1910 Census in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, in a household headed by Helen French, 34, laundress, that included her mother, Delia N. Pilsbury, 80. Stephen was called a cousin, 77, widower, machinist in a cotton mill.[12]
