Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation


JONATHAN GORDON6 MAXFIELD (Stephen5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Loudon, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, in 1799, a child of Stephen Maxfield and his wife Hannah Moody. He died in 1868.[1] He marreid at Canterbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 2 August 1829 OLIVE ABBOTT, a daughter of Samuel Abbott,[2] who was born at Loudon on 1806[3] and died there on 16 March 1894.[4]

Jonathan Gordon Maxfield lived his whole life at Loudon, where he was a farmer. When they married, Jonathan was 30 and Olive 23.

The Jonathan G. Maxfield family of Loudon was reported in the 1840 Census consisting of one male in his 40s (Jonathan 41), one female in her 30s (Olive 34), and one male between 10 and 15 (William 10); two were classified "agriculturalists."[5]

The Jonathan Maxfield family of Loudon was reported in the 1850 Census as follows:[6]

The 1860 Census also reported Jonathan, Olive and William at Loudon. Jonathan and William were both described as farmers.[7]

Jonathan Maxfield died in 1868. The 1870 Census reported Olive Maxfield, 62, residing with her son William, 40, farmer, at Loudon.[8]

Son William expanded his land base. In the week ending 7 October 1871 he received from Nancy E. Abbott for $125 land in Loudon. In the week ending 31 May 1875, William received from William K. Holt for $1100 land in nearby Canterbury.[9]

The 1880 Census reported William Maxfield, 50, farmer, at Loudon, with his mother Olive Maxfield, 73, and also Ruth G. Dimond, 72, keeping house.[10]

Olive (Abbott) Maxfield died in 1894 at the age 0f 87, from gastric dropsy.[11]

The 1900 Census reported William Maxfield, 70, farming and living alone at Loudon.[12]

William Maxfield died in 1905 from cardiac dropsy.[13] Having no children, he remembered numerous cousins in his will, and also left money to the town for a library, which is named in his honor, the Maxfield Public Library.[14]


Merrimack County Probate Records

According to Elizabeth Wright, in The Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record . Jonathan and Olive had two sons.[15] As there is no record of this other son, he probably died before 1840.

Jonathan and Olive Maxfield had the following child:

  1. WILLIAM7 MAXFIELD b. at Loudon on 28 December, 1829, d. there on 3 August 1905.[16]
