Sixth Generation

WILLIAM6 MAXFIELD (James5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Appleton, Lincoln County (later Knox County), Maine, on 10 January 1814, to James Batchelder Maxfield and his wife Hannah Batchelder,[1] and died at Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, on 18 July 1891.[2] He married at North Henderson, Mercer County, Illinois on 10 January 1839 MARIA K.6 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet5, Nathaniel4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) a child of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Jane McCrillis.[3] Maria was born at Appleton on 21 September 1814 and died at Knoxville on 16 October 1887.[4] William and Maria were first cousins, grandchildren of Nathaniel and Mehitable (Rowe) Maxfield

William and Maria both grew up in the same small town of Appleton, which in 1840 had a population of 891. They both moved west while in their twenties, along with or prior to their families of origin. Three of their four parents died the year following their marriage. Following marriage they lived at Millersburg, Mercer County. By 1844 they had moved to Knoxville. The 1840 Census described William as being engaged in manufacture or trade. In 1850 he was a carpenter. In 1854 he switched to farming.

The 1840 Census reported the William Maxfield family at Mercer County, consisting of a male and female in their 20s (William 26, Maria 25) and a female 15-19 (unidentified).[5]

The William Maxfield family was reported at Knoxville in the 1850 Census as follows:

The family was reported twice on the census. The other record gave William and Maria's ages as 35, and his real estate value at $600.[6] Another child, Anna, lived just nine days short of one year.

The 1860 census reported this family at Knoxville consisting of William Maxfield, 45, farmer, Maria, 44, Erastus, 20, farm laborer, William, 15, farm laborer, Asenath, 13, and Verlinda 11. All four children had attended school that year.[7]

The 1870 Census reported the family of William and Maria at Knox Township (Knoxville Post Office) consisting of William 56, farmer, Maria, 55, keeping house, William, 23, working on the farm, Acenath, 21 and Luia 18, at home. Also in the household was an immigrant from Sweden, 23, working on the farm.[9]

Linda, sometimes called Verlinda, married in 1878. The 1880 Census reported William Maxfield, 66, farmer, his wife Maria K., 66, keeping house, son William M., 36, farmer, and daughter Asenath, 33, at home, residing in Knox Township.[10]

In the 1910 Census they were reported on North Street, Knoxville, ages 64 and 62. William farmed, Asenath had her own income.[12] The 1920 Census reported them still on North Street, ages 74 and 72, no occupation.[13] William died in 1922, Asenath in 1929.
