Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JOHN MARSHALL6 MAXFIELD (Levi5, Joseph4-3-2, John1) was born at Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 15 February 1832, a child of Levi Worthen Maxfield and his wife Mary Hall.[1] He died some time between 1863 (conception of his last child) and 1870 (census). John married at Woburn on 14 February 1856 HARRIET ROE, who was born at Poland, Oxford County, Maine, on February 1837,[2] and was still living in 1920 (census).

John Marshall Maxfield grew up and lived his life at Woburn. He was a currier.

In the 1850 Census John Maxfield was reported living in Woburn, age 18, occupation currier, living in the household of Warren Fox, age 46, currier, and his wife Eliza R. Fox, age 42.[3] The 1855 Massachusetts state census reported him in the home of his parents, age 22, currier.[4]

John and Harriet married in 1856, and were reported at Woburn in the 1860 Census. The family consisted of John, 26, Harriet, 22, Ida, 2, and Cora, six months.[5]

John Maxfield served briefly in the Civil War. He enlisted on 16 June 1861, in Company G, Massachusetts 5th Infantry Regiment, and was mustered out on 31 July 1861.[6] This was long enough for John to see action in the first battle of Bull Run. After this point John Marshall Maxfield disappears from the record. His last child was born about 1863-4 at Maine. He is not in the 1865 Massachusetts census, and Harriet is the head of household in the 1870 Census. It would appear that Harriet, a young widow, moved back to the town where she was born.

The Harriet Maxfield's family was reported in the 1870 Census at Poland as follows:[7]

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, Harriet 32 F W keeping house ME
Maxfield, Ida 12 F W ME school
Maxfield, Cora 10 F W ME school
Maxfield, Minnie 6 F W ME school

In the 1880 Census Harriet was in Norway, Oxford County. Harriet, age 42, was a dress maker, daughters Cora, age 20, and Minnie, age 16, worked in a shoe shop.[8]

The 1890 Census Veteran's Schedule reported Harriet at Stoneham, Middlesex County.[9] The 1900 census reported Harriet M. Maxfield, dressmaker, born February 1837, boarding in the home of Richard and Ella Bowser, 65 Hancock Street, Stoneham.[10] The 1910 census reported Harriet, age 72, dressmaker, lodging at Stoneham. According to that census, she had three children, one of whom was still living.[11]

Harriet Maxfield was still living in the 1920 Census, at 94 Central Avenue, Medford, Middlesex County. Harriet was a widow, age 81, living with her daughter, Cora Sibby, also a widow, age 60, and Cora's son-in-law Charles W. Gray, age 29, railroad conductor, widower, and his two small children.[12]

John and Harriet Maxfield had the following children:

  1. IDA MARIA7 MAXFIELD >b. at Woburn on 27 October 1857.[13]
