Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

THOMAS H.6 MAXFIELD (Jesse5, Richard4, Joseph3-2, John1) was born at Bradford, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, about 1834-5,[1] the son of Jesse Abbott Maxfield and his wife Betsey Abbott. He married ELIZA M. ________, who was born at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, about 1837-8.[2]

Thomas is placed here as a son of Jesse because the birth record of the son of Thomas gives Thomas' birth place as Bradford, which is where Jesse lived about the time of Thomas' birth. Also the 1840 Census for Jesse indicated a male between the ages of 5 and 10, which fits Thomas.

Thomas H. Maxfield fought in the Civil War. He enlisted on 11 August 1862 and served in Company H of the New Hampshire 12th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Fredericksburg, 11 December 1862, but continued to serve until 21 June 1865.[3]

However, Thomas H. Maxfield was reported in the Massachusetts state census, taken on 1 May 1865, at Boston. That household was headed by James Spaigo, stone cutter, and included, among others, Eliza M. Maxfield, 26, weaver, and Thomas H. Maxfield, 28, born at New Hampshire.[4] So Thomas and Eliza had evidently married before that date.

Their only child was born in 1868. Although the birth was recorded at Boston, the record states the place of birth as "place unknown."[5]

Thomas and Eliza Maxfield were reported in the 1870 Census in Boston (South Boston Post Office) as follows:[6]

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, Thomas 38 M W teamster NH
Maxfield, Eliza 32 F W keeping house MA

I havde no further record on this family.

Thomas and Eliza Maxfield had the following child:

  1. THOMAS HADLEY7 MAXFIELD b. recorded at Boston in February 1868,[7] d. bef 1870 (not in census)
