Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

LUCUS G.6 MAXFIELD (Richard5, probably Benjamin4, Joseph3-2 John1) was born at Geuga County, Ohio, on 9 February 1834,[1] a child of Richard Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth Coon. He died on 29 March 1913.[2] He probably married first at Kent County, Michigan, about 1854-5 MARY WILKES.[3] He married second at Cuming County, Nebraska, on 9 February 1871 JENNETTE THOMPSON, who was born at New York on 4 August 1839, a child of John Thompson and Margreth Dods.[4] He married third, at Cuming County, on 6 November 1879 MARYETTA (WILSON) HUNTER. She was born at Steuben County, New York, on 17 March 1832, a child of John Wilson and Mary Stone.[5] Maryett had previously married at Warsaw, Jefferson County, New York, about 1849 WILLIAM HUNTER, who had been born at Pennsylvania and died at Nebraska on 25 November 1871.[6]

Lucas' father died when Lucas was a teenager. The 1850 Census reported Lucas Maxfield at Tully Township, Marion County, Ohio, with his mother and six siblings.[7]

The History of Kent County, Michigan states, "The first marriages were solemnized by Freeman Van Vickell, between Allen and Luther Maxfield and Catherine Thompson and Mary Wilkes, respectively."[8] As there was no Luther Maxfield in that area in that time period, and Allen Maxfield was brother to Lucas, "Luther" could be a mistake for "Lucas."

The 1860 Census reported Lucas J. Maxfield, a 26 year old day laborer, at Clay Township (Columbus Post Office), Bartholomew County, Indiana. He was living in the household of George and Amanda Rowland.[9]

Lucas G. Maxfield enlisted in the Union Army on 19 June 1861. He served in Company B, Indiana 13th Infantry regiment until discharged in 1 July 1864.[10] His regiment went first to West Virginia, then to the Shenandoah Valley. In June of 1862 they were relocated in eastern Virginia for the Peninsula campaign. The following year they saw action in South Carolina.

The 1870 census reported Lucas G. Maxfield at West Point Post Office, Cuming County, Nebraska. He was a 36 year old farmer born in Ohio. His real estate was valued at $700, and his personal estate at $350. He was living alone.[11] Within a year of that census he married Jenette Thompson, and they soon had two daughters. I don't know what happened to Jennette. Her second child was born in June of 1874; in 1878 Lucas married Maryetta Hunter. Maryetta's first husband died in a blizzard in Nebraska in 1871.[12] Maryetta had six children by her first marriage, but only one was reported in the home in the 1880 Census.

The 1880 census reported Lucas G. Maxfield at LaPorte, Wayne County, Nebraska:[13]

Lennis Allen, a descendant of Maryetta, has researched his family. His information adds some light on what happened to this family.

My name is Lennis Allen. Maryetta is my Great Great Grandmother. She was married to William Hunter. They were married in Warsaw tsp, Jefferson Co., Pa. about 1849. Their 1st child was Wallace Hunter b. 1850, Warsaw, Pa. [followed by] Walter Alonzo Hunter, 1852 Warsaw, Pa, John Grant Hunter Warsaw, PA. Mary Emeline Hunter b. 1860 Ill, Chester Hunter b. 1887, Mn. Burton Hunter. 1870, Pine Island, Goodhue Co., Mn. The family minus Wallacw moved back to Laporte, Wayne Ne in 1870 to join their son Walter Alonzo whom they sent ahead to meet with his grandparents in Ill and travel to LaPorte with them so that Walter Alonzo could get some land for them. William and Maryetta and children joined them in 1871 in LaPorte. William died in a blizzard Nov 25th 1871. Lucas married Jennette Thompson in Cuming Ne as I recall in 1871. The two girls, Gertrude and Bertha belong to Lucas and Jennette as near as we can tell as Maryetta signed for Mary Emeline in 1876 so she could marry Miles Standish Allen. When she did this she was using her maiden name. . . . In 1888 Maryetta and Burton left with John Grant Hunter, his wife Emma Allen and their children for Portlnd Ore without Lucas. Mary Emeline and family met their brothers in the Lewis River country Wa. Terr. That is near the town of Woodland today. Maryetta and Burton were not with them but Burton showed up 12 yrs later in Ca. Where he married. . .[14]

Lennis wrote on another occasion, "Because of reading about the early church and the connection of the circuit it serviced I am reasonebly certain that they, Lucas and Maryetta, met through the church."[15] In yet another email Lennis added some more clarity, with a reference to has sources:

. . . In 1884 Miles Stndish Allen and his wife Mary Emeline Hunter left fo the area of SW WA known as the Woodland area. In 1888 records kept by Maryetta's second son who remained in LaPorte state that Maryetta son Burton and son John George Hunter and his wife and children left for Walla Walla WA. What happened is that John George and his family arrived at the home in Woodland of his sister and his wife's brother in Woodland. . . . Further Maryetta's son that remained in LaPorte maintained in contact as shown in his records with Maryetta even giving her date of death but no location.[16]

I believe when Lennis said "John George Hunter" he meant John Grant Hunter.

The 1890 Veterans schedule reported Lucas G. Maxfield at Hartington, Cedar County, Nebraska, and that he suffered from chronic diarhea.[17]

The 1900 census reported Lucas Maxfield, widower, born February 1834 at Ohio, living at Dowling Township, Knox County, Nebraska. He was a farm laborer.[18] I have no further information on Maryetta.

The 1910 census reported Lucas G. Maxfield, 76, widower, living at Custer, Custer County, Oklahoma, with his daughter and son-in-law, Bertha and John Rossmiller.[19]

Lucas G. Maxfield and his wife Jenette Thompson had the following children:

  1. GERTRUDE J.7 MAXFIELD b. at Nebraska on 1872. d. on 1943;[20] m. at Hartington on 19 February 1891 GLEN C. BIGHAM[21] b. at Wisconsin on 1860, d. on 1942.[22]
  2. BERTHA AMANDA7 MAXFIELD b. at Nebraska on 6 June 1874, d. at Los Angeles County, California, on 10 September 1955;[23] m (1) at Hartington on 9 May 1891 LERENE HOLST b. at Denamrk about 1869-70;[24] Bertha m (2) about 1907-8 JOHN ROSSMILLER b. at Illinois about 1880-1.[25] Bertha m (3) OSCAR J. HARMON b. at Wayne County on 10 June 1872, d. at San Bernardino County, California, on 3 May 1949.[26] Child of Bertha and Lerene:
    1. Gilbert Holst b. at Nebraska about 1894-5.[27]
    Child of Bertha and John:
    1. Ema Rossmiller b. at Oklahoma about December 1909-January 1910.[28]

Marietta had the following children by her first husband, William Hunter:[29]

  1. WALLACE HUNTER b. at Warsaw Township on 1850.
  2. WALTER ALONZO HUNTER b. at Warsaw Township on 1852.
  3. JOHN GRANT HUNTER b. at Warsaw Township; m. EMMA ALLEN.
  4. MARY EMELINE HUNTER b. at Illinois on 1860; m. on 1876 MILES STANDISH ALLEN.
  5. CHESTER HUNTER b. at Minnesota on 1867
