Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

GLOVER BENJAMIN6 MAXFIELD (Joseph5, Benjamin4, Joseph3-2, John1) was born at Sodus, Wayne County, New York on 2 December 1841, a son of Joseph Maxfield and his wife Artemisia Munson. He died at Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, on 5 October 1922.[1] He married at Cresco, Howard County, Iowa, on 12 April 1874 FRANCES O'BRIEN,[2] a child of John O'Brien. She was born at Washington, D.C., on 15 December 1854 and died at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, on 21 January 1931.[3]

The oldest of six children, Glover spent his early years in upstate New York. When he was about fourteen years old his family moved to Wisconsin. When he was about twenty years old his family moved a little bit further west, to Minnesota.

The 1870 Census reported G. B. Maxfield, 28, single, printer, at Vernon Springs Township (Cresco Post Office), Howard County, living in the household of F. J. and Cynthia Mead.[4] It was at Cresco that Glover B. Maxfield, 32, married Frances O'Brien, 19, in 1874.

They appeared in the 1880 Census keeping a boarding house at Mason City with the following plus fourteen boarders:[5]

G. B. Maxfield self M M W 36 NY boarding house keeper NY NY
Frances Maxfield wife M F W 26 DC keeping house Ireland Ireland
Arthur Maxfield son S M W 5 IA NY DC
Cletus Maxfield son S M W 1 IA NY DC

The 1885 Iowa Census reported Glover Maxfield, 43, carpenter, Frances, 31, house cleaner, Arthur 9, and Cletus 6, at Huntley Street, Mason City. Both boys were reported born at Howard County.[6] The 1895 Iowa Census reported the family still at Mason City, just ten years older, except for Frances, who had only aged eight years [?]. Glover was still a carpenter. This census recorded the religion of adults. Glover's was "none," Frances was Catholic. Arthur was listed as "subject to military duty."[7]

The 1900 Census found Glover, Frances and Cletus at 204 Drummond Street, Mason City. Glover, born at New York December 1841 was a carpenter and builder. Frances, born in the District of Columbia in December 1853 had two children, both still living. Cletus E. Maxfield, born at Iowa in March 1879 was a telegraph operator.[8] Arthur Maxfield was reported at the Stanton Hotel, Mason City, where he worked as a hotel clerk.[9]

The 1910 census reported this family at 127 Elsworth Street, Mason City. Glover, 67, did general carpentry, Frances was 56, Cletus E., 30, was a telegraph operator.[10] I have not found Arthur in this census.

Both sons registered for the draft in 1918. Their registrations provide more information. Arthur, 43, was living at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, married, manager of a hotel, tall, medium build, with blue eyes and white hair.[11] Cletus, 39, lived at Charles City, where he was a news agent for J. J. Grier News Service, tall, medium build, with blue eyes and light hair.[12]

The 1920 Census found this family at 603 Joslyn Street, Charles City. Glover B. Maxfield, age 79, and Frances B. Maxfield, age 67, listed no occupation. Cletus E. Maxfield, still single at age 39, was news agent for the railroad train.[13] Arthur was still at Des Moines, proprietor of a hotel.[14]

Glover Benjamin Maxfield, retired printer, died at home in 1922, from apoplexy, also epilepsy.[15] Cletus died the following year. Called a "railroad newsy" for C. R. I. P. R. R., age 44, he suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis.[16]

The 1930 Census found widow Frances Maxfield living with her son Arthur and his family at Mason City.[17] Sher died in 1931 from a cerebral hemorrhage.[18]

Glover B. Maxfield and his wife Frances O'Brien had the following children:

  1. ARTHUR STUART7 MAXFIELD b. at Cresco on 12April 1875
  2. CLETUS EUGENE7 MAXFIELD b. at Cresco on 18 March 1879, d. at Charles City on 21 April 1923.[19]
