Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

RICHARD PETER MAXFIELD (Joseph5, Benjamin4, Joseph3-2, John1) was born at Wayne County, New York on 13 November 1853 (Myers, 1900 census),[1] a child of Joseph Maxfield and his wife Artemisia Munson. He died at LeRoy, Mower County, Minnesota, on 6 May 1927.[2] He married at LeRoy on 28 December 1892 ANNA BLACKMER,[3] who was born at Michigan on September 1871.[4] She was most often called alled "Nanna."

Richard Peter Maxfield, the sixth of six children, in his infancy lived in upstate New York. When he was six months old his family moved to Washington County, Wisconsin. When he was about nine years old, they moved to Mower County.

The 1880 Census reported Richard, 26, farmer, living at LeRoy with his brother Joseph and sister Martha, all single.[5] In 1892 Richard Maxfield, 39, married Nannie Blackmer, 21. The 1895 Minnesota census reported Richard P. Maxfield, 41, livery man, and Anna A. Maxfield, 23, living at LeRoy. Richard had been a resident of the state and of LeRoy for 36 years and six months.[6]

The 1900 census reported this family in the village of LeRoy:[7]

Richard and Nannie had been married seven years; she had two children, both living.

The 1910 census found the growing family at LeRoy village. Richard was manager of a livery stable. They had a third child, Kathryn, age 9. Nanny's age was estimated at 35. The household included a boarder, and a "brother-in-law" Horsey J. Baihr, age 55, widowed, born at Arkansas.[8]

After an interval of fifteen years, Richard and Nanny had a fourth child, Raymond, when Nanny was forty-six years old. Sons Miles and David both fought in World War I.[9]

The 1920 Census reported Richard P. Maxfield, 64, living again with his brother Joseph Miles Maxfield, 75, and sister Mattie A. Maxfield, 68, in LeRoy village.[10] Nannie and children were reported at a separate residence in LeRoy:[11]

Son Miles W. Maxfield married Rosemary Boyer in 1925. According to the record, Miles W. Maxfield, of Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, 29, student, married Rosemary Boyer, also of Des Moines, 21, child of Fred Boyer and Rose Cotter. This was Miles' second marriage, Rosemary's first.[12]

Richard Peter Maxfield died in 1927 from apoplexy.[13] His life was summarized in History of Mower County:[14]

Richard P. Maxfield b: 1853

Richard P. Maxfield, liveryman of LeRoy for thirty years, was born in Wayne county, New York, in November, 1853, and came to Washington county, Wisconsin, with his parents at the age of six months. The family located in section 36, LeRoy township, in 1862, and here, Richard P., who was the youngest of six, was reared to young manhood, remaining on the home farm until twenty years of age. Then he went to South Dakota and took up land, but a year and a half later returned and engaged in his present business.

Mr. Maxfield married Nanie A., daughter of John R. and Catherine Blacmer, and they are the parents of three children: Miles W., David C., and Catherine.

It is worthy of note that the great-great-grandfather of Richard P. Maxfield came from Scotland in the latter part of the eighteenth century.

The last sentence is incorrect, unless it intends his great-great-great-grandfather, who I have indicated as coming from England. I know of no other source that places his birth in Scotland.

The 1930 Census reported Nan A. Maxfield, widow, 48, managing a hospital at Crawford, Dawes County, Nebraska. With her were two sons, David C., 27, and Raymond R., 12.[15] Son M. W. Maxfield, an osteopathic doctor, roomed at Dell Rapids, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. The census taker called him single.[16] Son David Maxfield, 31, described as a dentist, was a patient at Battle Mountain Sanitoroum, Fall River County, South Dakota.[17] He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Veterans at Hot Springs, Fall River County, on 15 April 1930, with intestinal indigestion, chronic nephritis, and tentative colitis. This record indicates he enlisted in the United States Navy on 8 June 1917, and was discharged on 9 June 1919. He was described as 5' 9" tall, ruddy complexion, gray eyes, black hair, literate, no religion, dentist, single.[18]

Miles W. Maxfield married at Howard, Miner County, South Dakota, in 1935, to Edith Rainer. This would appear to be Miles' third marriage. Miles was 39, Edith 29, both residents of Dell Rapids.[19]

The 1940 Census reported Miles Maxfield, 43, and Edith, 33, at Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas. According to this record, Miles had completed five years of college and had a medical practice. Edith completed four years of High School. They were living at Sulphur Springs in 1935.[20] The 1940 Census also reported Nan A. Maxfield, 65, widow, at Crawford, described as a nurse at a convalescent hospital, Maxfield Convalescent Home, with five patients.[21] David C. Maxfield, 41, was reported in 1940 at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, where he was in private practice as an anesthetist. He had completed five years of college, and was single.[22] David married Myra Standley on 17 September 1940. I have no further information on her.

The 1950 Census reported Miles and Edith Maxfield at Suplhur Springs; Miles was retired.[23] David was a neuropsychiatric patient at Veterans' Administration Hospital, Meade County, South Dakota.[24]

I have not found Nan Maxfield in the 1950 Census, neither have I found a death record. Miles died at Sulphur Springs in 1961 from a myocardial infarction.[25] David died in 1959 at Meade County.

Richard Peter Maxfield and his wife Anna Blackmer had the following children:

  1. MILES W.7 MAXFIELD b. at LeRoy on 1 October 1896, d. at Sulphur Springs on 18 September 1961;[26] m(1).
