Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

GEORGE C.6 MAXFIELD (David5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Chester, Vermont, on 13 January 1844, a child of David H. Maxfield and his first wife Laura Miller. He died at Gloversville, Fulton County, New York, on 9 January 1910.[1] He married about 1868-9 (1900 Census) ANNETTE CLARK, who was born at Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont, on 27 June 1849, and died at Gloversville on 26 September 1917.[2]

George enlisted twice to serve in the Union forces in the Civil War. He enlisted as a musician in Company E, 1st Vermont Infantry, on 2 May 1861, and was mustered out at Brattleboro on 15 August 1861. George C. Maxfield then enlisted as a Private on 17 February 1862 in Company K of the 4th Vermont Infantry. He was mustered out on 13 July 1865.[3] The 4th regiment was heavily involved in the Army of the Patomac, in major battles throughout the Civil War.

I did not find a marriage record for George and Annette. When their first child was born, in 1869, they were living at Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont, and George was working as a shoemaker.[4] The census the following year reported George Maxfield, 27, working in a shoe factory, at Bennington, with his wife Nettie, 22.[5] I do not know why their daughter is not mentioned.

By 1873 this family had moved to Fulton County, where their second child was born. The 1875 New York state census reported this family at Gloversville:[6]

Line Name Age Sex Related B MS Occupation
25. Geo. C. Maxfield 35 M VT M glove cutter
26. Nettie Maxfield 26 F wife VT M keeping house
27. Lottie Maxfield 6 F daughter VT S
28. Charles Maxfield 1 11/12 M son Fulton co. S

According to this record, the George C. Maxfield family was living in the same frame structure as the William H. Maxfield family. This is where the record gets confusing. A significant number of Maxfields settled in Gloversville. All the other families, including William H. Maxfield, were, as far as I can determine, not related to George C. Maxfield, but were descendants of the James Maxfield, originally from Dutchess County, New York, who settled in Montgomery and Herkimer counties (see line 24: Descendants of John, James and Samuel Maxfield of Dutchess County). So I believe that the George C. Maxfield family was living in the same structure as an unrelated Maxfield family.

Gloversville became the center of the glove making industry in the United States. From 1890 to 1950, 90% of all the gloves made in the United States were made in Gloversville. Incorporated as a village in 1853, and as a city in 1890, Gloversville by 1890 had a population of 13,864. So many people, including people from two different Maxfield lines, were drawn to Gloversville for its work opportunities.

The 1880 Census reported this family at Gloversville consisting of George C., 36, glove cutter, wife Nettie, 31, rheumatism, son Charles, 7, at school, and daughter Lottie, 11, at school.[7]

We do not have any census record from 1880 to 1900, however George C. Maxfield can be traced through city directories. In every Gloversville Directory from 1881 to 1894 George C. Maxfield is described as a glove cutter. His address is given as 29 North Street through 1885, 31 North Street in 1887, and 23 Temple Street beginning in 1888.[8] Daughter Charlotte, called "Lottie," was listed separately after she reached the age of 18, at 29 North Street in 1887, 23 Temple Street from 1889-1891, and 39 Temple Street in 1894. She was described as a clerk beginning in 1889.[9] Son Charles D. Maxfield was listed separately beginning in 1890, living at 23 Temple Street in 1890 and 1891, 12 Beech Street in 1902.[10] He was described as a glover in 1890, 1891 and 1902 directories, and a glove cutter on his draft registration in 1918, but a bartender in the 1900 Census, and a musician in the 1920 Census.

The 1900 census reported the family at 39 Temple Street, Gloversville:[11]

Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, George C. head W M Jan 1844 M VT VT VT glove cutter
Maxfield, Annette A. wife W F Jun 1849 M VT VT Ireland
Maxfield, Lottie C. daughter W F Jun 1869 S VT VT VT dress maker
Maxfield, Charles D. son W M Aug 1873 S NY VT VT glove cutter

George and Annette had been married 31 years; she had two children, both living.

George C. Maxfield died at Gloversville on 9 January 1910. The census on 15 April of that year reported Mrs. George C. Maxfield, widow, age 60, at 39 Temple Street. With her were her son Charles D., 34, single, glover at a glove factory, and her sister, Julia Clark, 58, single.[12] Perhaps Charlotte is the "Lottie Z. Maxfield" reported lodging in a home at Rutland, Rutland County, where she worked as a milinary designer.[13] This is not proven, and is questionable as it gives her age as ten years younger.

Annette died in 1917. Charlotte died in 1919. When Charles D. Maxfield reported for the draft in 1918 he was married to Sarah. On that record he reported he was a glove cutter for Van Wirt-Chase. He was medium height, stout, with brown eyes and black hair.[14] The 1920 Census reported Charles D. Maxfield, 48, musician, at Gloversville, with his wife Sarah, 48.[15] Charles D. Maxfield died in 1922 at the age of 48.

Sarah Maxfield, widow, 58, glove maker for a glove factory, was reported at Gloversville in the 1930 Census.[16] The 1940 Census reported Sara Maxfield, 67, widow, glove mender at a glove factory, at Gloversville. She had completed four years of High School.[17] Sarah died in 1941.

George C. Maxfield and his wife Annette Clark had the following children:

  1. CHARLOTTE Z.7 MAXFIELD "Lotta" b. at Bennington on 14 June 1869,[18] d. at Gloversville on 17 June 1919.[19]
  2. CHARLES DELMAN7 MAXFIELD b. at Fulton County on 20 August 1873,[20] d. at Utica, Oneida County, New York, on 23 April 1922;[21] m. before 1918 SARAH ________ b. at New York about 1871, d. at Gloversville on 18 March 1941.[22]
