Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

CHARLES M.6 MAXFIELD (David5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1 ) was born at Chester, Windsor County, Vermont about 1845, a child of David H. Maxfield and his wife Laura Miller. He married at Chester on 10 May 1871 ELLEN JANE BROWN, daughter of Elijah W. Brown and Cynthis Dewolf,[1] who was born at Putney, Windham County, Vermont, on 25 December 1847 and died at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, on 6 October 1937.[2]

Charles M. Maxfield was a merchant at Chester. The Bellows Falls Times reported on 24 April 1868, "[Charles H. Rowe] has sold out his business to Mr. Charles M. Maxfield, his former faithful clerk and assistant P. M., who will continue it, and who is a very worthy and competent young man."[3] His advertisement on 18 December of that year listed new gold and silver goods for holiday presents, jewelry, solid silver and the best silver plated ware, albums, writing desks, backgammon boards, ladies' toilet and fancy goods, pocket cutlery.[4] Running the general store also involved being post master.

Charles and Ellen married in 1871 and were reported in the 1880 Census in Chester, Vermont, as follows:[5]

I have no further information on Charles M. Maxfield after the 1880 Census, and the only further record I have of Ellen is her death record in 1937.

Son Charles Brown Maxfield married Edna M. Leonard at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1903. They were both residents of Grand Rapids at that time. Charles was employed in silk sales, Edna was a clerk.[6] I have no further record of Edna.

Charles B. Maxfield married Evah Bright at Jackson County, Missouri, in 1915. According to that record, Charles lived in Jackson County, and Evah was from Ionia County, Michigan.[7] Charles registered for the draft at Grand Rapids on 12 September 1918. At that time he was living at 1040 Madison Ave. SE, Grand Rapids. He worked as an assemblyman for Wolverine Brass Works, Grand Rapids. He was 5' 6" tall, stout, with blue eyes and brown hair.[8]

The 1920 Census reported Charles B. Maxfield, 41, his wife Enah, 36, and their daughter Virginia, 2 years and 2 months, at Kansas City, Jackson County. He was working as a salesman for a brass company.[9] The 1930 Census reported them still at Kansas City; Charles was now selling insurance.[10]

Virginia married in 1936. The 1940 Census reported Charles B. Maxfield, 61, at Grand Rapids, where he managed an apartment house.[11] Evah, 57, was in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, housekeeper for a family.[12]

Charles B. Maxfield died in 1948. Eva Maxfield, 67, was reported in the 1950 Census living with her brother, Maurice Bright at Detroit.[13] She died in 1959.

Charles Maxfield and his wife Ellen Jane Brown had the following children:

  1. HERBERT W.7 MAXFIELD b. at Chester on 13 July 1874.[14]
