Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

ELHANAN W.6 MAXFIELD (Varnis5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1) was born at New York on 19 September 1833, a son of Varnis Maxfield and his wife Percey Irish. He died at Richfield, Genesee County, Michigan, on 3 February 1884.[1] He married at Richfield on 22 November 1857 MARY E. WORTH.[2] She was born at Oakland County, Michigan, on 13 August, 1840, and died at Genesee County on 14 September 1921.[3] Mary married as her second husband at Richfield on 13 May 1886 LEONARD SPRAGUE,[4] who was born at Troy, Oakland County, on 20 November 1838 and died at Genesee County on 27 July 1905.[5]

The second of ten children, Elhanan was born at New York, but sometime between the ages of two and five his family moved to Michigan. His father was a farmer.

Elhanan and Mary were both residents of Richfield when they married, and were reported there in the 1860 Census. Elhanan was 27, Mary 20, and he was a day laborer. They had one child, called "Joel" [Jared] six months old.[6]

The family soon grew, and was reported in 1870 at Richfield as follows:[7]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
8. Maxfield, Elhanan 36 M W stone mason $ 1000 $ 300 NY
9. Maxfield, Mary 29 F W keeping house MI
10. Maxfield, Jared 10 M W MI
11. Maxfield, Norman 8 M W MI
12. Maxfield, Edna 6 F W MI

All three children were attending school.

Elhanan was elected constable in 1865.[8]

Nine years after the birth of Edna, Mary had a fourth child. All were reported at Richfield in the 1880 Census:[9]

Line Name Race Sex Age Related MS Occupation B FB MB
23. Maxfield, Elhanan W M 49 M stone mason MI NH NY

27. Maxfield, Edna V. W F 16 daughter S domestic servant MI MI MI
28. Maxfield, R. J. W M 8 son S MI MI MI

This household was followed immediately by the household of Elhanan's father, Varnis Maxfield.

Edna married in 1883. Elhanan died in 1884, at the age of 50, from consumption of the liver. The death record called him "farmer and mason."[10] Mary was left with three children at home, ages 11, 21, and 25. Two years later she married Leonard Sprague. Norman married in 1891, at the age of 29; Edna died in 1892 at the age of 28; R. J. married in 1892 at the age of 20; Jared married in 1896 at the age of 37.

The 1900 Census reported a family that was scattered. Mary (Worth) (Maxfield) Sprague, 57, lived with her husband Leonard Sprague, 61, in Forest Township, Genesee County. Leonard was a farmer. Mary had given birth to five children, three of whom were living.[11] So there may have been another child, unreported, who died in infancy. Daughter Edna had also died. Jared F. Maxfield lived in Norton Township, Muskegon County, with his wife Clarissa. He was 39, a farmer; she was 35.[12] Norman lived at Richfield Township with his wife and two children; he was a stone mason.[13] R. J. also lived in Richfield Township, where he farmed. The family consisted of R. J., 27, his wife Isabell, 26, and their daughters Hazle, 7, Maggie, 6, and Edna, 4.[14]

Leonard Sprague died in 1905, causing Mary to become a widow for the second time. The 1910 Census reported Mary E. Sprague, widow, 68, at 343 Popular Street, Flint.[15] Jared lived at Muskegon, Muskegon County, with his wife and daughter.[16] Norman lived at Flint with his second wife, Clara. Norman, 47, was a well digger, Clara was 27.[17] R. J. continued to live at Richfield Township with his wife, Isabel, and their two youngest daughters, Edna, 14, and Olive, 2.[18] Their daughter Hazel was living at Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, where she was described as a niece of Arthur and Rebecca Miller. At age 17, she did housework for a private family.[19] I have not found their daughter Margaret in this census.

In the following decade R. J.'s three eldest daughters married. Margaret and Edna married in 1912 brothers, Jesse L. Selleck and Henry Wallace Selleck. I have not found widow Mary in the 1920 Census. Jared continued to live at Muskegon with his wife and daughter, where he worked as a real estate dealer.[20] Norman farmed in Richfield with his wife Clara, and a son by his first wife, Roy.[21] R.J. farmed nearby in Richfield, where he lived with his wife and youngestg daughter Olive.[22]

Mary (Worth) (Maxfield) Sprague died in 1921. Under "cause of death" the certificate read "nothing apparent but worn out."[23]
