Sixth Generation

JULIAN ANN6 MAXFIELD (Oliver5, Joshua4-3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Fort Ann, Washington County, New York about 1846-7,[1] a child of Oliver and Mary Maxfield. He died at Glens Falls, Warren County, Nwew York, on 20 February 1907.[2] He married at Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont, on 31 May 1873 ELECTA COOK, child of Gilbert Cook and Mary Ann Carter, who was born at Fort Ann about 1854-5.[3]

The first of four children, Julian grew up at Fort Ann, a small town on the Champlain Canal.

The 1870 Census reported Julian Maxfield, 19, boatman, living at Fort Ann with his parents and siblings.[4] He married in 1873, and was reported in the 1875 New York state census at Fort Ann; Julius was 26, boatman, born at Washington County; his wife Electa was 20, born at Washington County.[5]

The family of Julian and Electa Maxfield was reported at Fort Ann in the 1880 Census as follows:[6]

Electa probably died some time between the 1880 Census and the 1892 New York state census. That state census reported Julian Maxfield, 44, laborer, at Aurora, Erie County, New York.[7] Daughter Gracie Maxfield, 16, was living with her grandparents, Oliver and Mary Maxfield, at Fort Ann.[8] Son Eddie Maxfield, 14, also at Fort Ann, was living in the household of E. W. and Addie Allen.[9] I find no further record of the unnamed daughter of the 1880 Census.

I have not found Julian in the 1900 Census. Grace M. Maxfield, 24, dressmaker, resided at Fort Ann in the household of William and Amanda Crosby.[10] Edward Maxfield, 23, shirt maker, lived at Queensbury Township, Warren County, in the household of Eugene Washburn.[11] Grace Married in 1904. Julian died in 1907.

Edward Gilbert Maxfield married Mary Geer in 1900, but she died in 1902. In 1903 he married Alice M. Dautz, and their son, Arthur Thomas Maxfield, was born in 1908. The 1910 Census reported Edward G. Maxfield, 33, shirt worker in a shirt factory, wife Alice, 27, and son Arthur T., 2, living at Glens Falls.[12]

When Edward registered for the draft, on 12 September 1918, he described himself as a machinist for Clark Textile Company. He was of medium build, medium height, with blue eyes and brown hair.[13]

The 1920 Census found Edward G. Maxfield, 42, machinist in a silk mill, at Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, New York. With him were wife Alice, 36, and son Arthur, 11.[14] The 1930 Census found the couple back at Fort Ann, where Edward ws a mechanic in a steel mill;[15] son Arthur had married and was no longer in the home. The 1940 Census reported the family at Toadrock Pond Road, West Fort Ann:[16]
