Lauren Manly and Mary Lyons Maxfield

LAUREN MANLEY6 MAXFIELD (David5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 6 November 1840, to David Carr Maxfield and his wife Thankful Hurd Cutts, and died at Woodburn, Marion County, Oregon, on 13 February 1924.[1] He married at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on 6 September 1863, MARY ELIZABETH LYONS,[2] who was born at Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York, on 3 March 1845 and died at Delano, Wright County, Minnesota, on 11 February 1902.[3]

Lauren Maxfield grew up on a farm in New Hampshire, the fifth of six children. When he was twelve years old his mother died. About three years later he and his family moved to Minnesota. The 1860 Census reported "Laura" Maxfield with his father and other family members at Eagle Creek Township (Shakopee Post Office), Scott County, Minnesota.[4] When Lauren married in 1863 he was twenty-two years old and his wife Mary was eighteen.

During the Civil War, Lauren enlisted in the Union Army on 17 August 1864, and was mustered out on 26 June 1865. He served in the Minnesota 11th Infanty regiment,[5] which was tasked with protecting the Louisville-Nashville railroad; a thirty-mile stretch. They had occasional skirmishes with Confederate guerillas and raiders, however did not take part in any notable engagements.

The 1870 Census found L. M. Maxfield, 29, farming at Greenbush Township (Princeton Post Offcie), Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. With him were his swife, M. E. Maxfield, 25, and children E. M. [Addie M.], 5, and David, 3.[6] The very next enty on the census record was for his brother, G. S. Maxfield. The 1875 Minnesota state census found the family with the same composition at the same location.[7]

The 1880 Census found this family at Benson, Swift County, Minnesota. Lorin was a farmer, son David, 13, was called a "herder."[8] Son David died at the age of seventeen at Excelsior, Hennepin County. Another son, Clarence, probably born after 1880, died four days after his brother David. A daughter, Mary, was born in 1884. The 1885 Census reported the family at Mounds View, Ramsey County, Minnesota, consisting of L. M., 43, Mary, 40, Ida [Addie], 20, Mary, 1, and nephew Elmer Babb, 24[9] (child of Lauren's sister Alzina).

The family moved to Wright County about 1888. Ther 1895 Minnesota state census reported them at Delano, Wright County. The family consisted of:

Dean Cameron shared with me in an electronic mail that Lauren was personal architect for ten years to railroad tycoon James J. Hill.[11] I have not yet found other evidence to support this claim.

The 1900 Census reported the family in Delano village, Franklin Township, Wright County:[12]
