GEORGE SIDNEY6 MAXFIELD (David5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 3 August 1843,[1] a child of David Carr Maxfield and his wife Thankful Hurd Cutts. He died at Ocean Park, Los Angeles County, California, on 8 March 1932.[2] He married at Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota, on 16 December 1866 SARAH ELIZABETH COLE[3] who was born at Rhode Island or Maryland or New Hampshire (various census records) on 14 February 1844 and died on 21 April 1918.[4]
George began his life on a farm in New Hampshire. When he was ten years old his mother died. When he was about thirteen years old he moved with his father and siblings to Minnesota. The 1860 Census reported the family at Eagle Creek Township (Shakopee Post Office) Scott County, where George was seventeen years old and attending school.[5]
George Maxfield fought for the Union in the Civil War. According to information in Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars 1861-65, he enlisted in Company A, Minnesota 3rd Infantry regiment on 9 October 1864, and was musterd out on 3 September 1865.[6] However the 1890 Veterans' Census placed him in that regiment from 9 October 1861 to 3 September 1865.[7]
George and Sarah married in 1866. The 1870 Census reported thom at Greenbush Township (Princeton Post Office), Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, immediately after the family of his brother Lauren. George's family consisted of G. S. Maxfield, 26, farmer, S. E. Maxfield, 26, keeping house, and E. Maxfield, 1.[8] The 1875 Minnesota state census reported them at the same location, just five years older.[9]
George Maxfield's family was reported inn the 1880 Census at Benson, Swift County, Minnesota, as follows:[10]

George and Sarah had a son born in 1882 who died in 1884. The 1885 Minnesota state census reported the family still at Benson, consisting of George S., 41, Sarah E., 40, Lizzie, 15, and Anna, 8.[11] According to the 1890 Veterans' Census, George S. Maxfield, living at Clontarf, Swift County, suffered from chronic rheumatism.[12]
By the time of the 1895 Minnesota state census George Maxfield had left the farm and was living at Kensington, Douglas County, Minnesota, with an occupation related to the agrarian economy. It reported that G. S., 52, had been a resident of the state 39 years, of that location 4 years. He was a wheat grader and a veteran soldier. His family included Sarah, 52, Lizzie, 26, Annie, 18, and Georgie, 7. Lizzie was a public school teacher.[13]
The family began shrinking as the children left home. In 1900 they were still at Kensington village, Solem Township:[14]

The 1910 census reported the family in the same township, consisting of Geo. S., 66, Sarah E., 65, and Georgia M., 21. George was post master, Georgia assistant post master. Sarah had four children, three of whom were living.[15]
Georgia married in 1912. Sarah died in 1918. The 1920 Census found George S. Maxfield living with his brother Lauren, both widowers, at Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California.[16] George was still there in 1930.[17] He died in 1932.
