HENRY EDGAR6 MAXFIELD (Nathan5, Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1 ) was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 16 June 1842 a son of Nathan Hurd Maxfield and his wife Lamira C. Cutts.[1] He died at Newport, Sullivan County, on 10 February 1883.[2] He married first at Newport on 24 December 1869 CELESTE L. CARR.[3] She was born at Newport on 29 December 1843, a daughter of John Carr. She died there on 25 July 1879.[4] Henry married second ELLA L. GOVE,[5] who was born at Franklin, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, on 18 October 1856, and died there on 22 February 1935,[6] a daughter of Alonzo Gove.
The second of four children, but the eldest to survive infancy, Henry grew up on a farm at Goshen. The 1860 Census reported him at Goshen, age 17, with his parents and two younger siblings.[7]
When they married in 1869, Henry was 27 and Celeste, often called "Kate," was 25. The 1870 Census reported the newly married couple farming at Goshen (Mill Village Post Office), near his parents.[8] They had three sons born in the 1870s. Kate died at the age of 35, leaving Henry with children ages 6, 4, and 3.
Henry and sons were reported in the 1880 Census at Newport as follows:[9]

Within eleven months of Kate's death, Henry remarried. Henry was 37, Ella 23, at the time of this marriage. Within three years Henry died, from laryngeal and pulmonary phthisis.[10] This left Ella with three step-sons, aged 9, 8, and 6. The court appointed Ella guardian of her stepsons.[11]
Of the three sons, Berton became a lawyer, George became a doctor, and Lester remained a farmer.
The 1900 Census reported Lester Maxfield, 25, farming at Franklin. with him were his mother Ella, 42, a boarder who was a school teacher, and a farm laborer.[12] George H. Maxfield, 23, was an officer at the Tewksbury Stete Hospital, Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where he was described as a student.[13] In 1897 he had become the third assistant to the doctor at the New Hampshire State Hospital.[14] I have not found Berton in that census.
Berton Maxfield married in 1907 and was reported in 1910 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, as a lawyer with a general practice. The family consisted of Berton, 37, his wife Winifred, 33, and their son Berton, one year and eleven months.[15] George H. Maxfield had received his Medical Doctorate from Harvard Medical School in 1903,[16] and in the 1910 Census was reported as a physician at the Boston State Hospital, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachuestts.[17] Lester continued to farm at Franklin, accompanied by his step-mother Ella.[18]
George Maxfield married in 1910, and in 1913 began working as a doctor at the Soldiers' Home at Chelsea, Suffolk County.[19] The other two brothers reported for the draft. Berton reported at Brooklyn on 12 September 1918. He was tall with light brown hair and gray eyes.[20] Lester reported on that same date at Franklin; he was tall, medium build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.[21]
The 1920 Census found Lester C. Maxfield, 45, farmer, at Franklin, with his mother, Ella Maxfield, 53, and Merrill and Ada Morey, perhaps relatives of Ella; Merrill was also farming.[22] Berton, 47, lawyer, was reported at Brooklyn with his wife Winifred, 43, and son Berton, 11.[23] George H. Maxfield. 43, was reported at Chelsea, a surgeon at the Soldiers' Home. With him were his wife Helena, 38, and son Harold G., 6, and a servant, Lottie Mahan, 17.[24]
Lester Maxfield married in 1920. He was 46, his bride, Caroline, was 37. The 1930 Census reported Lester Maxfield, 55, owner of his farm at Franklin; with him were his wife Carrie, 46, and mother, Ella, 73.[25] Berton L. Maxfield's only son, also named Berton, died at the age of nineteen at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, where he was a student, from acute intestinal obstruction.[26] The 1930 Census reported the childless parents, Berton, 58, and Winifred, 55, at Brooklyn, where Berton continued to practice law.[27] The 1930 Census reported Dr. George H. Maxfield, 53, at Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, where he worked as a physician at the State Hospital (a.k.a. insane asylum). According to this record George was a veteran of the World War. With him were his wife Helena, 45, and son, Harold, 16.[28]
Widow Ella (Gove) Maxfield died at Franklin on 1935 at the age of 78, from acute bronchitis.[30] George Maxfield continued to live at Bridgewater with his wife and son.[31] Lester continued to farm at Franklin, with his wife, and a hired hand, Fred Emerson.[32]
Winnifred, the widow of Berton Maxfield, died at Watertown in 1946. The 1950 Census reported George Maxfield, 73, at Bridgewater, retired, with his wife Helena, 68.[33] Their son Harold, 36, also lived in Bridgewarer, with his wife Ruth and daughter Ann.[34]
Lester Maxfield died at Franklin in 1961 after a long illness. According to his obituary he had served two terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He died from a coronary thrombosis.[35] His widow Caroline died in 1964 from cardio-pulmonary collapse.[36]
