New Bedford to William and Maria P., 1st;Pauline Lane, the daughter of Edwin and Asenath Lane, was born at Boston on 23 February 1854 (1900 Census; Lane 1:185). According to the 1880 Census (560:431D) Edward and Pauline were living with Pauline's parents at Boston. Her father was born in New Hampshire, her mother in Vermont. Edward was an auditor for the Eastern Railroad.

The 1900 Census (648:5A) found this Maxfield family at 31 Farragut Road, Swampscott, Massachusetts. The family consisted of Edward, born March 1853 in Massachusetts, his wife Pauline, born February 1854 in Maine, and their three children, Ralph (born July 1880), Stella (born June 1883) and Pauline F. (born July 1886), all born in Massachusetts. Edward was an auditor for the railroad; Ralph was a clerk for the railway. Edward and Pauline had been married 21 years, and she had three children, all living.
The 1910 census (588:130B) reported Edward, 56, wife Pauline, 58, and daughter Stella, 26, at the same address in Swampscott. Edward continued to work as an auditor in the railroad office, Stella also worked there, as a stenographer.
The 1920 census (697:16A) reported the family at the same address: Edward, 66, auditor for a steam railroad, Pauline, wife, 66, and Stella, daughter, 36, pass clerk at the railroad office.
Pauline (Lane) Maxfield died some time before the 1930 census, when Edward was reported as a widower, at 31 Farragut Road (903:8B):

Treasurer of Herald Tribune from 1919-31 Succumbs at 55
Ralph E. Maxfield of 435 West 119th Street, was treasurer of the Herald Tribune from 1919 until his retirement in 1931, died yesterday afternoon in the Fitch Sanitarium, 123 West 183d Street, the Bronx, of pneumonia, at the age of 55.
His widowm Selma, and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Kenyon of Los Angeles, and Pauline Robinson of Maine, survive.
Mr. Maxfield, who was a native of Swampscott, Mass., had been wit the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for some years, first as treasurer, then as assistant to the publisher.
