Lemuel Maxfield married MARY ACKLEY at Grand Rapids, Michigan, on 18 February 1863 (Kent Co M). The record indicated that Lemuel, 22, and Mary, 18, were both from Lamont, Ottawa County, Michigan. Courtney Smith, Pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, performed the service. Mary was born at New York about September 1844 (1900 Census).

Lemuel's work as a steamboat engineer caused his family to move several times, along the course of the Mississippi River. The 1880 Census (175:447C) reported them at Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. Lemuel, 39, was an engineer, Mary, his wife, was 35, In addition to Hettie, 15, and Flora 13, the family now had a son, Harry, 3, born at Illinois.

The 1900 Census (71:10A) reported Lemuel and Mary Maxfield at 205 Walnut Street, Helena, Saint francis Township, Phillips County, Arkansas:

According to this record, Lemuel and Mary had been married 36 years, their nephew had been married seven years. Mary had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living.

A 1910 census record for "Leonard P. Maxfield" appears in all other respect to be this family. The 1910 census (16:20B) located them on Alcott Avenue, Bridgeport, Jackson County, Alabama:

This record also indicated that the couple had been married 47 years, and that Mary had two children, both living.

Lemuel Peak Maxfield died at Bridgeport, Alabama, on 3 May 1915 (AL D). The 1920 Census (18:11B) reported widow Mary Maxfield, age 74, born at New York, living at Bridgeport, Alabama. Mary Maxfield die at Bridgeport on 8 February 1922 (AL D).
