JOSEPH L. BALLARD7 MAXFIELD (Josiah6, Jacob5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Salem, Massachusetts (child's birth record) about 1837 (1836/7 from 1850 census; 1837/8 from enlistment record). His parents were Josiah Maxfield and his first wife Sarah Stone.

Joseph B. Maxfield and ELISA ANN EARLE were married at Salem on 7 October 1858 (VR Ma 117:204). They were both from Salem. Elisa was born at Montreville, Maine, in August 1841, a child of Levi and Almira Furbush. She was adopted, and received the last name of Earle as a result of her adoption (from 2d marriage record; date from B. Chaplin).

The young Joseph and Elisa Maxfield family was reported in the 1860 Census in South Danvers (Essex County), Massachusetts, as follows (Ma 7:178):

Joseph B. Maxfield was a shoemaker, according to this 1860 census, his military enlistment record in 1861, and the birth records of his children in 1859 and 1861.

Joseph B. Maxfield enlisted in the Union Army on 2 September 1861. He died while in the service of his country, at Bolivar, Virginia, on 10 November 1862 (MSSMCW 2:210). His military record was as follows:

Elisa Maxfield, Joseph's widow, married at South Danvers on 6 March 1865, JOHN GREGORY (VR Ma 180:269:12). The event was recorded as follows:
