Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

MERRITT C.7 MAXFIELD (Thomas6, Jacob5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Salem, Massachusetts, on 9 March 1851 (VR Ma 51:218:277). His parents were Thomas Maxfield and his wife Susan Vincent.

Merritt Maxfield and CARIO E. LANE published their intentions to marry at Dexter, Maine, on 21 August 1880, and were married there the next day (VR Me). He was from Guilford, she from Dexter; Jotham Lane, clergyman, performed the service.

Merritt Maxfield married again, this time to EVA LEATHERS at Maine on 24 December 1892 (VR Me M). Eva was born at Maine on June 1864 (1900 Census).

The 1900 Census (598:2:298A) reported the Merritt Maxfield family on Guilford Center Road in Guilford, Maine:

Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Merritt C. head W M Mar 1851 M ME NH MA farmer
Maxfield, Eva F. wife W F Jun 1864 M ME ME ME
Maxfield, Josephine A. daughter W F Dec 1886 S ME MA ME at school
Maxfield, Edith R. daughter W F Feb 1896 S ME MA ME

Although the record stated that Merritt and Eva had been married 20 years, that was the period of time that had elapsed since Merritt's first marriage. The record claimed that Eva had two children, both living; however the dates of birth indicate that Merritt had one child by each wife.

The 1910 census (545:2:172A) found Merritt Maxfield the patriarch of a three-generation household on Water Street, Guilford Center, Guilford, Maine:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Merritt C. head M W 59 M2 MA NH MA farmer,
General farm
Maxfield, Eva F. wife F W 45 M1 ME NH ME none
Maxfield, Edith R. daughter F W 14 S ME MA ME none

woolen mill
Sullivan, Jessie A. daughter F W 24 M1 ME ME ME none
Richards, Edna A. grandchild F W 6 S ME ME ME none
Sullivan, Harry R. grandson M W 1 8/12 S ME Italy ME none

According to this record, Merritt and Eva had been married 17 years, and Eva had two children, both living. Tony came to America in 1897 and was not yet a citizen. Tony and Jessie had been married three years, and Jesse had two children both living. The implication is that Edna was a child of Jessie by an unnamed Richards to whom she was not married.

The 1920 Census (647:10B) found Merritt and Eva Maxfield at Church Street, Sangerville, Maine. He was age 68, a millman, laborer, she was 55.
