Although the record stated that Merritt and Eva had been married 20 years, that was the period of time that had elapsed since Merritt's first marriage. The record claimed that Eva had two children, both living; however the dates of birth indicate that Merritt had one child by each wife.
The 1910 census (545:2:172A) found Merritt Maxfield the patriarch of a three-generation household on Water Street, Guilford Center, Guilford, Maine:

According to this record, Merritt and Eva had been married 17 years, and Eva had two children, both living. Tony came to America in 1897 and was not yet a citizen. Tony and Jessie had been married three years, and Jesse had two children both living. The implication is that Edna was a child of Jessie by an unnamed Richards to whom she was not married.
The 1920 Census (647:10B) found Merritt and Eva Maxfield at Church Street, Sangerville, Maine. He was age 68, a millman, laborer, she was 55.
