JOHN DENNISON8 MAXFIELD (John7, Ira6, Obadiah5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Lamont, Tallmadge Township, Ottawa County, Michigan on 8 October 1876 (Edwards) a child of John A. Maxfield and his wife Louisa Tracy. John was probably about nineteen when his family moved to California. A few years later, in 1897, he undertook a cross-country bicycle ride, which would include a visit to his old home in Michigan. The following article fron the Denver Daily News was reprinted widely across the country by other newspapers, including this one in the Newark (Ohio) Daily Advocate of 7 July, 1897.

It is not known how for he got. The 1900 census (117:135A) reported him in a boarding house at 1011 Nineteenth Street, Denver, Colorado. John D. Maxfield, born June 1877, was a jewelry manufacturer.

John Maxfield fought in the Spanish-American War. Granddaughter Alice Braunton Leichter shared with me by electronic mail (Leichter)

He fought in the Spanish American War and came back to the US in bad health, Lita (sometimes spelled Leeta) met him when girls went to meet returning soldiers in San Diego, I think. This is what my mother Virginia told me.
John D. Maxfield married LITA CARRIE COOK at San Diego, California, on 10 December 1903 (CA M). Lita was born at California on 31 January 1878 (CA D).

The 1910 census (95:7A) reported John D. Maxfield, a forest ranger working for the government, at Cleveland National Forest Reserve, Ramona Township, San Diego County, California. John was 33, his wife Lita C., 32. They had been married 6 years and had no children. Lita was born at California, her father at Iowa, her mother at Texas. The 1920 census (105:4A) found this family at 5824 Clark Street, Los Angeles, California:

John D. Maxfield died at Los Angeles on 6 March 1930 (Ottawa Co obit). For his full obituary see below. The 1930 Census (162:17A) reported widow Lida Maxfield and daughter Virginia at 410 North Avenue Fifty-three, Los Angeles:

Lita (Cook) Maxfield died at Los Angeles County, California, on 4 September 1946 (CA D).

John D. Maxfield and his wife Lita Carrie Cook had the following child:

John D. Maxfield, brother of Mrs. F. E. Slater, passed away in Los Angeles, March 6. Mr. Maxfield was born in Lamont, October 8, 1876, and went to California with his parents 37 years ago, where he has since made his home.
He was a Spanish War veteran and spent a year in the Philippines. After returning from Manilla, he entered the United States Forestry service and spent fifteen years in the work. He then became manager of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce building, which office he held until his death. He was a musician and his voice was heard many times over the Los Angeles Times broadcasting station.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, his aged mother, and four sisters, all residents of California, but Mrs. Slater.
