DONALD HARRISON⁸ MAXFIELD (John^7-6, Henry⁵, David⁴, Eliphalet³, Nathaniel², John¹ ) was born at Fairfax, Franklin County, Vermont, on 18 February 1890^[1], a son of John Brownell Maxfield and his wife Carrie Bevens . He died at Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont, on 17 December 1957.^[2] He married at Fairfax on 23 June 1920 SARAH ELIZABETH CLARK.^[3] She was born at Fairfax on 19 October 1901, a daughter of Leon Clark and his wife Martha Jenette Castle. She died at Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont, on 18 Februry 1987.^[4]

Don and Sarah both grew up on farms in Fairfax; both experienced loss early in life. Sarah was the eldest of three sisters. When she was thirteen, her mother died from pneumonia, to which she was more vulnerable because of a weak heart.^[5] Sarah's father, Leon Clark, continued a widower, laboring on his rented farm.^[6] Don was the second of eight children, the eldest of six who survived childhood. When Don was ten his mother died, and when he was sevnteen his father died. The younger children were scattered to the homes of relatives and others. Don went west.

The 1910 census found Don Maxfield at Virgil Township, Kane County, Illinois. age 20 and born in Vermont; he was a "helper" in the household of Walter and Edith Burbank, where he labored as a farm hand on their rented farm.^[7]

By 1917 Don H. Maxfield was living in Milestone, Saskatchewan. Responding to the call of the Canadian draft board, he reported for a physical exam at Regina, Saskatchewan, on 1 October 1917. The exminers found him to be a young man of 27 years and 9 months, single and in good health. 5' 4 ½" tall, 143 pounds, with fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. Don enlisted on 16 January 1918. He then received smallpox vaccination, from which he had a strong reaction. Don suffered from vaccina, for which he was treated at Gray Nun's hospital, Regina, from 30 January to 15 February. As a member of the 1st Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment, Don embraked on the Metagama from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 9 April, and arrived at Liverpool, England on 20 April 1918. Maxfield was stationed with his unit at Seaford, Sussex, England, for most of his time in the service. He was hospitalized from 1 to 14 August for disordered action of the heart. He was hospitalized again, at Ripon, Yorkshire, for the flu, from 5 to 12 February, 1919. This was probably the influenza epidemic that swept across the globe in late 1918, and lingered afterwards. With his unit, Don Maxfield embarked from Ripon on 14 June 1919, arrived at Montreal, Quebec, and was discharged on 26 June 1919. Maxfield listed as his intended residence after discharge: Peace River Crossing, Alberta. Now simply called Peace River, this community in northwest Alberta is over 1300 kilometers beyond his previous home of Milestone, Saskatchewan.^[8]

It is doubtful that Don Maxfield ever made it to Peace River Crossing. Within a year he was getting married in Fairfax, Vermont.

Donald H. Maxfield and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Clark had seven children in the twelve years following their marriage. Six of the children lived to adulthood and married. Although they may have thought of Fairfax as home, the list of birth places of their children suggests they moved frequently. Their children were born in the following locations:

• 1921, Wolcott, Lamoille County, Vermont
• 1922, Fletcher, Franklin County
• 1924 Burlington
• 1926, Grand Isle, Grand Isle County, Vermont
• 1928 and 1930, Fairfax
• 1932, Burlington. but parents of Fairfax

In 1930 the family resided on School Strret, Fairfax village, in the town of Fairfax:^[9]

This record further stated that Donald rented their home for $5 a month, that Donald and Sarah had married at the ages of 30 and 18 respectively, and that Myrtle and Ruby were attending school.

In 1932 Sarah Maxfield gave birth to a child who was stillborn. In the following years the family fell apart. According to the 1940 census, Don and Sarah had divorced; each member of the family was living in a different place:

• Donald Maxfield, age 50, farm laborer, divorced, was a lodger in the household of Howard and Rita Irish, of Fairfax. Donald had completed seventh grade; his income for the previous year was $156.^[10]
• Sarah, called Elizabeth Maxfield on the census record, age 38, divorced, lived at the Bakersfield Poor Farm, Bakersfield, Franklin County. Under occupation she was described as "institutionalized." She had completed three years of High School.^[11]
• Myrtle Maxfield, age 18, attended school and had completed sixth grade. She was an "inmate" at Bishop Hopkins Hall, Rockpoint School for Underpriveleged Girls, Burlington.^[12]
• Ruby Maxfield, age 17, was a live in maid in the home of Almon and Minnie Woodward, Westford, Chittenden County. She had completed seventh grade; her income for the year was $78.^[13]
• Joyce Maxfield, age 15, attended school and had completed seventh grade. She was a lodger in the home of Daniel and Emily Coolum, a farm family of Fairfax.^[14]
• Harvey Maxfield, age 14, attended school and had completed fourth grade. He was a lodger in the home of Ernest and Lora Miner, another farm family of Fairfax.^[15]
• Audrey Maxfield, age 11, attended school and had completed fourth grade. She lived with her aunt and uncle, Helena M. and Norman A. Smith, in the village and town of Grafton, Rensselaer County, New York. This was probably Donald's sister Helena, although she claimed in 1940 to be only 40 years old. Norman Smith, age 42, was a milk dealer with a route, earned $800 the previous year, and had completed eighth grade. Helena had completed one year of high school. They also had a daughter Dorothea, age 14, attending school, who had completed eighth grade.^[16]
• I have not located Loren Maxfield in the 1940 census. He would have been nine years old on the day of the census.

In the following decade the children of this family moved on into adulthood. Ruby married in 1945, Joyce in 1946, Myrtle in 1948. Harvey joined the Marines in 1945.

Donald Harrison Maxfield died at the Vermont State Hospital, Waterbury, on 17 December 1957, age 67. He had been at the hospital for seven days because of a cerebro-vascular accident, probably thrombosis. He suffered from cerebral arteriosclerosis.^[17]

Sarah Maxfield died at Birchwood Terrace Health Care, Burlington, on 18 February 1987, age 85. She died from cardiac arrest, however had a history of diabetis.^[18]

Loren Marshall Maxfield died at Burlington on 23 May 1992, age 62, from a probable myocardial infraction. However, under "significant conditions contributing to death," Dr. Mark Hoskins listed on the death record "chronic alcoholism; heavy cigarette smoking."^[19] Loren made a career of the military, serving in the United States Army during the Korean and Viet Nam wars and in between, from 21 April 1952 to 20 April 1954, and 7 July 1954 to 30 November 1975.^[20]

Harvey S. Maxfield died suddenly at home in Burlington on 18 February, 2000, age 73, from arythmia. He was a roofer.^[21] Harvey served in the Marines toward the end of World War II, and in Korea, 13 March 1945 to 20 June 1949, and 31 October 1950 to 4 October 1951.^[22] He did not marry until the age of 38. His obituary described him as "a sweet, kind and gentle man."^[23]

Joyce (Maxfield) Price died at Saint Anthony's Hospital, Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, age 81. She moved to Florida in 1951. Her first husband, Richard Stratton, died in Florida in 1985. She worked for thirty-two years as a licensed practical nurse at Bon Secours Maria Manor, Saint Petersburg.^[24]

Audrey (Maxfield) Bentley died peacefully at home in Watervliet, Albany County, New York, on 24 January 2008, age 79. She lived in the Albany-Troy area all her adult life, and raised her family there.^[25]

Myrtle Edna (Maxfield) Merchant Oliver died at her home in Perkinsville, a village in the town of Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 12 December 2010, age 89. Her first husband, John Merchant, died in 1971, and in 1975 she married Alfred Oliver, who died seven moths before her. Myrtle retired in 1975 from many years of work at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington.^[26]

Ruby C. (Maxfield) Collins died peacefully at the Starr Farm Nursing Center, Burlington, following a long illness, age 90, in 2013. Her husband, Arthur Collins, died in 1969, and she lived another 43 years as a widow.^[27]

RUBY CAMILLA⁹ MAXFIELD b. at Fletcher on 8 June 1922;^[35] d. at Burlington on 30 June 2013;^[36] m. at Burlington on 22 November 1945 ARTHUR TIMOTHY COLLINS,^[37] b. at Jericho, Chittenden County, on 27 July 1913, d. at Burlington on 9 March 1969,^[38] child of Tomothy and Leonora (Reynolds) Collins. Ruby had the following child out of wedlock:
