HERBERT W.8 MAXFIELD (John7, James6, Eliphalet5-4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Maine on September 1861 (1900 census), a child of John B. and Lydia Maxfield. In 1880 (census 488:519C) he was a farm laborer living at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Fannie and W. M. Higgins, at Starks, Somerset County, Maine. By the time of the 1900 census (599:2:70) he had been married and widowed. Born in September 1861, he was keeping a summer resort at Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Somerset County.

Herbert W. Maxfield married NELLIE G. (GRANT) MORTON at Maine on 31 December 1905 (ME M). She had been born at Maine about 1867 (1920 census). The 1910 census (546:1:76B) reported them at Pleasant Ridge:

Herbert and Nellie had been married four years. She had four children, all living. John Higgins was the son of Herbert's sister Fannie.
