In 1948 he was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin (Covina Citizen 18 Jun 1948, p. 8). He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, on 10 June 1951 (Covina Citizen 15 Jun 1951, p. 3).

John Edward Maxfield married MARGARET ALICE WAUGH, who was born at Connecticut. Her name is given on their daughter's marriage record.
