WILLIAM2 MAXFIELD (Joseph1) was baptized at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire, England, on 22 September 1844 (Eng Bp), a child of Joseph Maxfield and his first wife Martha White. His mother died when William was eight years old, and within a year his father had remarried, and soon began a new family. When William was about fourteen his father and new family sailed to America. His two living full siblings were married and settling in England by 1861. I don't know when William came to America. He enlisted as a Private in Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment New Jersey on 23 February 1864. He was granted a disability discharge on 22 April 1864 at Fairfax Seminary, VA (Civ War Sol). Sometime in 1864 or earlier he married RHODA ________, who was born at New Jersey about 1844/5 (1870 census).

William Maxfield married as his second wife at Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, on 25 January 1877 ELLEN GROSS at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (IGI). Ellen was born at Pennsylvania about December 1852 (1910 census).

The 1880 census (1164:374C) reported William and Ellen Maxfield at Northumberland, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. It gave their ages as 35 and 29 and reported William "works in R. mill." Son John could possibly be the John Maxfield reported (793:373A) as a farm hand, age 14, in the household of S. D. Arnold at Randolph, Morris Cunty, New Jersey.

The 1890 veteran's census (1890 Census) reported William Maxfield, who served in Co. H, 7th NJ Regiment for 3 months in 1864, residing at Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. William had "lungs affected and Rheses." The 1900 census (1383:1:119A) reported William and Ellen Maxfield living on Vine Street, Towanda Township, Bradford County. William, born September 1843 at England, was a day laborer. Ellen, born December 1852 at Pennsylvania, had two children of whom one was living. They had been married 23 years. NOTE: I have no information on any children of Ellen. Perhaps the census taker misunderstood, or Ellen thought of her step-children as her children, of which there were two, one living.

I have not found this family in the 1910 census. William Maxfield, the Civil War Veteran, died on 27 February 1918, and was buried at Milton, Pennsylvania (Tice). The 1920 census (1541:6B) reported Ellen Maxfield, a widow, age 67, working as a housekeeper in the home of John Leljedal and his grandson Lawrence Leljedal, on Flat Road, Towanda Township, Bradford County.

William Maxfield and his first wife Rhoda had the following children:
