Descendants of Clement Maxfield
of Dorchester, Massachusetts
Tenth Generation

CHARLES REDFERN10 MAXFIELD (Charles9, Sanford8, Abel7, David6, probably Daniel5-4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1) was born at Warren, Rhode Island, on 21 December 1879 (VR RI 1879:22), a child of Charles Sanford Maxfield and his wife Sarah H. Redfern. The birth was recorded as follows:
Warren: Dec 21, 1879 Charles Redfern Maxfield male white 2d, b. Warren to Charles S. and Sarah H. Maxfield of Warren. He trader b. Bristol; she b. Bristol.
The 1900 census (634:20B) reported Charles R. Maxfield, a lodger, living on Holman Street, Attleboro, Massachusetts, working as a salesman in a music store.

Charles R. Maxfield probably married MARION B. BOWEN about 1904/5. They probably had two children. However, in the census records for 1910, 1920, and 1930, they do not appear in the same household. I infer the marriage from the names and ages of the children as they appear in census records, as follows:

The 1910 census (1436:1:190B) reported Marion Maxfield living at 19 Child Street, Warren, RI:

Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
Maxfield, Marion head F W 24 M1 RI RI RI none
Maxfield, Stanley Charles R. son M W 3 S RI RI RI none
Bowen, Elizabeth S. mother F W 60 W RI RI RI none
Stanley, Hannah grandmother F W 83 W RI RI RI none

According to this record, Marion had two children, both living, and had been married five years. Perhaps the census taker confused two children into one. Elizabeth had only one child; Hannah had two children, only one still living.

The 1920 census (1670:37B) reported Marion and son Stanley at 19 Child Street, Warren:

Bowen, Elizabeth head F W 70 W RI RI RI none

Maxfield, Stanley B. grandson M W 18 S RI RI RI none

Perhaps I have misread Stanley's age and it should be 13. Charles was reported as a widower in the 1920 census (1670:1A). He and his son Charles were living with his father at Warren. Charles Redfern Maxfield was manager of an ice cream parlor.

The 1930 census (2169:14B) reported Charles, his mother Sarah, and his son Charles, living on North Road, on the island town of Jamestown, Rhode Island.

Charles R. Maxfield died at Pinellas County, Florida, in 1949 (FL D).
