CHARLES SANFORD9 MAXFIELD (Sanford8, Abel7, David6, probably Daniel5-4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1) was born at Bristol, Rhode Island (marraige record), in June 1851 (1900 census), a child of Sanford C. Maxfield and his first wife Sophia Handy.

SARAH HANNAH REDFERN married Charles S. Maxfield at Bristol on 6 December 1876 (VR RI M 1876:462), as described in the record:

Sarah Redfern was born at Bristol in June 1845 (1900 census), a child of Thomas Redfern and Mary Holingworth.

Charles S. Maxfield, called a farmer in his 1876 marriage record, was called a trader in the birth records of his children, in 1878 and 1879. Census records called him a trader in fallow lard in 1880, "householder" in 1900, no occupation in 1910, and manager of a grocery store in 1920.

The 1880 census (1209:112D) reported Charles P. Maxfield, 28, his wife Sarah H., 34, and their son Charles R., 5 months, at Warren, Rhode Island. All were born in Rhode Island; Sarah's parents were born in England.

The record further indicated that Sarah had two children, one of whom was living.

The 1910 census (1436:1:185A) reported a four-generation household at 311 Main Street, Warren. In addition to Charles (58) and Sarah (64), the household included son Charles R. (30), a bookkeeper, married for five years, his son Charles, age 4, and the first Charles' father, widower Sanford Maxfield, age 81.

The 1920 census (1670:1A) reported the family at the same address, consisting of Charles S. Maxfield, 68, manager of a grocery store, his wife Sarah H., 75, son Charles R., 40, manager of an ice cream parlor, and grandson Charles R., 14.
