Descendants of Clement Maxfield

Ninth Generation

CHANECY WILLIAM 9 MAXFIELD (George8, Abel7, David6, probably Daniel5-4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1) was born at Bristol, Rhode Island, on 8 December 1859 (VR RI B 1859:10), a child of George Maxfield and his wife Rith Barnard. His birth was recorded as follows:
Bristol: Dec 8, 1859: Chanecy W. Maxfield, male, white, 6th, b. Bristol to George and Ruth A. Maxfield, white, of Bristol, both b. Bristol
His first name appeared on various records as "Chanecy," "Chancy," "Chanery," "Chauncy," "Chauncery," "Charney," "Charnecy," and "Chauncey."

BETSY CAPOLA MANCHESTER married Chanecy Maxfield at Warren, Rhode Island on 20 December 1879 (VR RI M 1879:490). She was sometimes called "Bessie." The marriage was reported as follows:

Warren, Dec 20, 1879
Chancy William Maxfield of Bristol, 20, laborer, b. Bristol to G. W. Maxfield and Ruth A. Barnard; 1st;
Betsy Capola Manchester of Warren, 18, b. Little Compton to Fred A. Manchester and S. M. Willis, 1st;
by Rev. Edwin S. Straight
Betsy Manchester was born at Little Compton, Rhode Island, in May 1861 (1900 census) to Fred A. Manchester and S. M. Willis (marriage record).

Chanecy Maxfield of Bristol was called a laborer in 1879, a rubber worker in the 1880 census, a farmer in 1881, a rubber worker from 1883 through 1886, a laborer again in 1889, and a worker in the cutting department of N. R. Company in the 1900 census.

The 1880 census (1209:37A) reported Chancy Maxfield, age 21, rubber worker, his wife Betsey, 19, keeping house, and cook-servant Kattey O'Lear, living at Bristol.

The 1900 census (1504:1:15) reported this family at North Hope Street, Bristol:

The record also indicated Bessie had nine children, eight of whom were living. "Elenor" must be a mistake for Elmer, whose birth was recorded in that month.

The 1910 census (1436:1:191A) reported the family at Warren, Rhode Island, where Chauncy, 57, was a landscape gardner. The family included Betsy R., 59, sons Fred W., 25, Elmar C., 23, and George, 21, and daughters Lucieque, 20, Elizabeth, 18, and Grace (probably daughter-in-law), 21. Fred was a farmer, Elmar a rubber cutter at the rubber works, George a shoe shiner at a shoe parlor, Lucy and Elizabeth worked at a handkerchief shop where Lucy was a cutter and Elizabeth a stitcher. George and Grace had been married less than a year.

Betsy Maxfield died between 1910 and 1920, as she appears in the former census, but the latter census (1670:1A) reported widower Chaunecy Maxfield, age 55, living at Child Street, Warren, with his son Frederick, 35, driver of a team, and his wife Betsey, 32.
