GEORGE WOOD 8 MAXFIELD (Abel7, David6, probably Daniel5-4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1) was born at Bristol, Rhode Island, between 9 March and 8 April 1823, according to his death record. His parents were Abel Maxfield and his wife Betsey Chaffee.

RUTH ANN BARNARD and George W. Maxfield, both of Bristol, were married at Thompson, Connecticut, on 4 August 1844 (Barbour I), by a Justice of the Peace, Vernon Stiles. Ruth Ann was born at Bristol, according to the birth records of several of her children, on August 1824, according to the 1900 census.

George Maxfield was called an engineer in the 1850 census, a farmer in 1854, laborer in 1857, and engineer again in 1869 on the birth record of a child. The 1870 census called him a stationary engineer of a steam engine; the 1880 census called him a farmer. These records also indicated that the George and Ruth Maxfield family lived in Bristol through 1852, were in Swansea, Massachusetts, in 1854, in Bristol again in 1857 and 1859, in North Providence, Rhode Island, in 1869 and 1870, and back in Bristol in 1880.

NOTE
According to this birth record, Frances Maxfield was a girl. However the 1870 and 1880 census records, and the death record, all report Francis Maxfield as male. The ages, census records, and number of children attributed to Ruth Maxfield in the 1900 census, all point to one Francis, not two. The birth record would appear to be in error.
