ELLIOT5 MAXFIELD (Robert4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, District of Maine, on 1 November 1798[1] a son of Robert Carr Maxfield and his wife Tabitha Clough. He died on 12 August 1846.[2] He married at Cumberland, Cumberland County, on 25 December 1821 ESTHER LEIGHTON.[3] She was born about 1801 and died on 31 August 1882.[4] She married second at North Yarmouth on 2 September 1849 BENJAMIN SAWYER, who was born about 1794-5.[5]
Elliot Maxfield grew up in North Yarmouth and lived his adult life in the adjoining town of Cumberland.
The census records for 1830 and 1840 list the numbers in a household by age and sex; the Elliot Maxfield household reports could be explained as follows:[6]

The name Francis/Frances could be male or female, and is often spelled insensitive to the gender. According to the birth record, Francis was male, but in the 1840 census was female. It is possible that the census taker, being given the name, assumed the gender. On the other hand, if Frances is female, she could be the Frances E. Maxfield reported in the 1850 census age 19 in Cumberland,[7] and the Frances E. Maxfield who married Edward Bisbee on 5 July 1854 at Yarmouth.[8] The evidence is insufficient to say.
Elliot Maxfield died at the age of 47, on 12 August 1846, and was buried at the Congregational Church Cemetery in Cumberland.[9]
Esther (Leighton) Maxfield married again, at the age of 48, at North Yarmouth on 2 September 1849 to Benjamin Sawyer.[10] He was born about 1854-5 at Maine, and had married Lydia Field at Deering, Cumberland County, on 27 January 1825.[11] She died on at Durham, Cumberland County, on 17 September 1848,[12] at the age of 47.
The 1850 census reported the Benjamin Sawyer family at New Gloucester, Cumberland County, consisting of Benjamin, 55, farmer, Esther, 48, and Melissa, a child from his first marriage, 6.[13]
Benjamin and Esther Sawyer were reported as an empty-nest couple at New Gloucester in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses.[14] Esther (Leighton) (Maxfield) Sawyer died on 31 August 1882 and was buried at the Congregational Church Cemetery in Cumberland under the name of Esther Maxfield.[15]
Elliot Maxfield and his wife Esther Leighton had the following children:
