of Salisbury, Massachusetts

ROBERT C.6 MAXFIELD (Elliot5, Robert4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at Cumberland, Cumberland County, Maine, on 14 June 1826 a son of Elliot Maxfield and his wife Esther Leighton. He died at North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, on 26 January 1889.[1] He married first HARRIET A. PAINE. She was born at Maine about 1829-30 and died on 29 June 1862.[2] He married second ABBIE B. KNIGHT. She was born at Pownal, Cumberland County, about May 1829, a daughter of Edward and Deborah Knight, and died at Yarmouth, Cumberland County, on 9 November 1897.[3]

Robert Maxfield probably married Harriet Paine sometime before the birth of their first child, who was born about 1856-7. Harriet had been living with her widowed mother, Martha, at Pownal, in 1850.[4] The 1860 census reported Robert, 34, and Harriet, 30, at Pownal, where Robert was engaged in farming. In addition to their two children, Estelle, age 3 years, and Florence, age 5 months, the household included Harriet's mother, Martha Paine, age 70, and Edwin Paine, age 14, perhaps a nephew.[5]

Tragedy struck this Maxfield family in 1862. Estelle died on 25 March, Florence on 30 March, and Harriet on 29 June.[6]

Robert abruptly found himself alone. He soon found a new partner; only 20 months passed from the death of his first wife to the birth of his first child by his second wife. Robert married Abbie Knight. The 1870 census found them at Pownal, where Robert was farming. The family then consisted of Robert, 42, Abbie, 40, and their first three children, George, 6, Hattie, 4, and Hannah, 1. The household also included two young men working as farm hands, Henry Blake, 24, and Charlie Blake, 16.[7]

The 1880 census reported the family still farming at Pownal. In addition to Robert and Abbie and the first three children, the family included their fourth child, Fannie, age 8, and five boarders.[8]

This family experienced major life transitional events in the 1890s. Son George married in 1891, and settled in Yarmouth.[9] Abbie died at Yarmouth in 1897, age 68, from cerebral apoplexy.[10] Fannie married in 1898.[11] Robert died in January of 1899, age 70, from pneumonia, caused by "LaGrippe."[12] In July of that year Hattie married at Boston.[13] Robert's death record listed his occupation as butcher; every other record called him a farmer.

I have no further information on daughter Hannah beyond her presence in the family in the 1880 census. Hattie married Harry Allen at Boston in 1899. At that time Harry lived in Boston and worked as a janitor; Hattie lived at Waltham, Massachusetts, where she worked as a watchmaker.[14] The 1900 cenus found them living with Harry's mother in Yarmouth, where he was farming.[15] Some time after the birth of their second child in 1902 and before the 1910 census this Allen family moved to Los Angeles, California, where they lived the rest of their lives, holding various jobs.[16] Fannie and her husband James Bradley settled in Yarmouth. James worked in a lumber mill; later they both worked in a sardine factory.[17] They did not have children.

Robert C. Maxfield and his first wife Harriet Paine had the following children:

  1. ESTELLE S.7 MAXFIELD b. at Maine abt. 1856-7; d. on 25 March 1862.[18]
  2. FLORENCE A.7 MAXFIELD b. at Maine on 1860; d. on 30 March 1862.[19]

Robert C. Maxfield and his second wife Abbie B. Knight had the following children:

  1. GEORGE L.7 MAXFIELD b. at Pownal on 8 March 1864.
  2. HATTIE E.7 MAXFIELD b. at Pownal on 17 August 1866;[20] d. at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, on 3 April 1946;[21] m. at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 10 July 1899 HARRY THOMAS ALLEN, a child of Mathias G. Allen and Jennie Moody,[22] b. at Portland, Cumberland County, on 30 October 1872, d. at Los Angeles County on 13 June 1955.[23] Harry and Hattie Allen had the following children:
    1. Ruth H.8 Allen b. at Maine abt. 1901[24]
    2. George W.8 Allen b. at Maine abt. 1902.[25]
  3. HANNAH ETTIE7 MAXFIELD bp. at Pownal on 3 December 1868,[26] living 1880.
  4. FANNIE E.7 MAXFIELD b. at Maine abt. July 1871;[27] m. at Yarmouth on 16 February 1898 JAMES E. BRADLEY, son of John Bradley and Sarah E. Mills, b. Milan, Coos County, New Hampshire, abt. October 1876,[28] d. at Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine, on 17 December 1968.[29]
