of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

PATRICK5 MAXFIELD (Zadock4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 13 March 1776[1] a son of Zadock Maxfield and his wife Susanna Sherman. He died at sea on 3 November 1802.[2] He married at New York, New York County, New York, on 12 May 1799 ELSA LORING,[3] sometimes called "Eliza." She was born at New Bedford on 30 November 1774,[4] a daughter of Joshua and Innocent Loring. She died at New Bedford on 10 December 1842.[5] She married as her second husband at New Bedford on 15 May 1816 KILLEY ELDRIDGE,[6] who was born at New Bedford on 16 September 1764,[7] a child of Isaiah Eldridge and Sarah Delano, and died at New Bedford on 5 December 1845.[8] Killey Eldridge had married MERCY CHURCH at New Bedford on 3 January 1791.[9] She was born on 13 April 1768 and died at New Bedford on 30 July 1809.[10]

Patrick Maxfield left his childhood home of New Bedford, to make New York City his home port. He married there in 1799 a young woman from New Bedford. On 8 July 1800 he began his will,

This is the last will and testament of me Patrick Maxfield Master of the Brig Eliza of New York [11]
Patrick Maxfield set out on the Eliza almost immediately after writing that will. On 19 July Captain Pearce of the Resource noted in his log book,
On the 19th of July, in lat. 33° 20' N long. 63° 30' W spoke the brig Alias of New York, Patrick Maxfield, master, bound to Jamaica, out 9 all well. Capt. Maxfield informed us, that there were four French 20 gun ships cruizing on our coast; that they all kept pretty much together, in lat. 28° N long. 69° W and had captured ten American ships. . . . [12]
The Alias must be a miss-hearing of Eliza. The location is near Bermuda. He saw the French ships at a location east of Florida and southwest of Bermuda. France and England were at war, making trade difficult.

As Patrick Maxfield was engaged in trade, his voyages were not as long as those of his relatives engaged in whaling. He must have been back in New York long enough to conceive a child. He died at sea in 1802, "lost over board on his passage home from Malaga."[13] Patrick left a 27 yer-old widow who was about five months pregnant. Their only child was born at New York in 1803. Patrick's will, proved at New York County on 5 February 1803, left everything to his wife Eliza.[14]

The 1800 census reported the Patrick Maxfield household in the 7th Ward of New York City, consisting of a man and a woman between 26 and 44, and a girl under 10.[15] Elsa returned to New Bedford with her child, where the 1810 census reported "Widow E. Maxfield," a woman between 26 and 44, with a male child under 10.[16]

Widow Elsa Maxfield married widower Killey Eldridge at New Bedford in 1816. Elsa brought to their marriage her son; Killey brought his five living children; together they had two more. They lived in the town of Fairhaven, Bristol County, although their deaths were recorded in New Bedford.
