CHARLES PATRICK6 MAXFIELD (Patrick5, Zadock4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at New York City, New York County, New York, on 14 March 1803, post-humous son of Patrick Maxfield and his wife Elsa Loring.[1] He died at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, 26 August, 1886.[2] He married at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 6 November 1826 ELIZA DAVENPORT.[3] She was born at New Bedford on 21 December 1805, a child of Dudley Davenport, who was born in Little Compton, Newport County, Rhode Island, and his wife Phebe, who was born in New Bedford.[4] Eliza died at New Bedford on 4 May 1869.[5]
Charles' parents were married only three years before his untimely death. His father, Patrick Maxfield, master of the brig Eliza, out of New York City, was lost overboard when returning from Malaga. We don't know when Charles' mother was informed of her husband's death, but four months after he fell overboard, Charles Patrick Maxfield was born. Thirteen years after the death of her first husband, Charles' mother remarried. What happened to widow Elsa and baby Charles over those thirteen years? Where did they live? How did Elsa support herself and her child? I have no answer to these questions. All I know is that the 1810 Census reported Elsa living at New Bedford with her child.[6]
When Elsa (Loring) Maxfield remarried in 1816, thirteen year old Charles entered a blended family. His step-father brought to the family children ages 18, 16, 13, 12, and 9. They were soon joned by two more children.
Charles Patrick Maxfield married Eliza Davenport when he was 23 and she 20. They lived at New Bedford where he worked as a carpenter, and they had six children.
The 1830 Census reported them in New Bedford with a boy and a girl under the age of ten.[7] The 1840 Census reported Charles engaged in "manufacture and trade." They had five children. The age and sex categories match what we otherwise know of the family.[8]
Son Charles died in 1849, age 21, while on the bark Peri.[9] The 1850 Census reported the Charles Maxfield family of New Bedford as follows:[10]

Daughter Alice died in 1850 at the age of 23. Daughter Sarah married Henry Luce in 1852. The 1855 state census reported a household consisting of Charles Maxfield, 52, house carpenter, Eliza Maxfield, 47, and their three youngest children at home, John, 21, seaman, Nathan, 20, house carpenter, and Eliza, 13.[11]
According to the 1860 Census daughter Sarah and her husband had returned to live with her parents:[12]

Sarah (Maxfield) Lucas died later in the year 1860. Children Eliza and John both married in 1863. Eliza's husband, Theodore Barton, and Nathan Maxfield, both served in the Army during the Civil War. The 1865 state census reported a household of Charles P. Maxfield, 62, carpenter, Eliza, 57, Nathan, 29, Army, Theodore Barton, 24, Army, and Eliza Barton, 23.[13] John D. Maxfield, 30, described as a grocer, was living at New Bedford in the household of Paul and Louisa Eurn with his wife, Mercy, 20, and their child, Susan, 1.[14]
Eliza died in 1869 from consumption,[15] Son Nathan married in 1865, had a child in 1867, and his wife died on 1868. He remarried on June 1, 1870, the day of the census. That census reported Charles P. Maxfield, 69, house carpenter, in New Bedford, in the household of Benjamin Tripp, 63, house carpenter, with Charles' son, Nathan Maxfield, 33, house carpenter, Nathan's wife, Mira, 34, Mira's son by a previous marriege, Wilfred, 14, and Nathan's son by his first marriage, Charles, 2.[16] John D. Maxfield, seaman, 35, and his wife Mercy, 26, were living in New Bedford with Mercy's mother, Sarah Taber, 60.[17]
Son John D. Maxfield died in 1873, his wife had died in 1871. Charles P. Maxfield was reported in the 1880 Census at 281 Broadway, Providence, Rhode Island, in the household of his son-in-law Theodore Barton:[18]

Charles Patrick Maxfield died at Providence on 26 August 1886, age 83 years, from old age.[19]
