Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

ELIPHALET5 MAXFIELD (David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New Hampshire about 1775-6 a son of David Maxfield and his wife Judith Clough. He was last reported living at North Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont, in June 1850. He married POLLY________. She was born at Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on 22 February 1774 and died at North Hero on 5 April 1860.[1]

Eliphalet was not listed as a child of David and Judith on Frederick Gilmore Maxfield's Family Tree of 1905,[2] but was listed as a child of David and Judith in a letter from Julia (Maxfield) Lamb in 1903.[3] Perhaps the ommission was caused by Eliphalet's leaving the family at a young age to go to southern New England, while the rest of the children remained with the parents as they travelled from New Hampshire to northwest Vermont. Eliphalet's only child was born at Connecticut about 1799; by 1800 he had moved to near the rest of his family in Vermont. Settlement in the same general area as the rest of the family, and some land transactions with them, point to his belonging to this family. His birth state and approximate date is based on information provided in the 1850 census. Polly Maxfield, living in the same town as Eliphalet in the 1850 census, and both living with members of the same extended family, although in different households, was probably Eliphalet's wife. Whether she was his only wife, or his wife in later life, I cannot determine. Eliphalet would appear to have had a wife in the 1820 and 1840 censuses, the only one's in which he was mentioned. Her birth date and place are based on her death record, but I have not found her in Barnstable records.

About 20 Sep 1800 Eliphalet Maxfield of Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont, sold to Elisha Cleveland of Georgia 35 ½ acres in Georgia. Cleveland was burned to death in his new home in an accident in October 1800, before the transaction had been recorded. Eliphalet registered the deed on 24 November 1810.[4]

In the summer of 1801 Eliphalet Maxfield's name appeared on a list of persons in Georgia delinquint in paying their federal direct tax. Eliphalet's property may not have included any real estate, as he was assesed on only $12, while the heirs of David Maxfield, Jr., David Maxfield, and Isaac Maxfield owed on 131, 126, and 130 respectively.[5]

On 8 April 1805 Obadiah Maxfield of Milton sold to Eliphalet Maxfield now of Colchester, Chittenden County, for $320, 75 acres in Georgia.[6]

On 19 March 1810 Eliphalet Maxfield was "warned" out of Colchester.[7] This was a practice in New England, where anyone coming into a town without visible means of support was "warned out," that is, told to leave, so that their support would not become a drain on the town.

For a discussion of which Eliphalet Maxfield served in the War of 1812 go to Eliphalet son of Eliphalet

On 25 November 1815, Eliphalet Maxfield of Colchester sold to Heman Hill for $20, land in Georgia.[8]

Eliphalet Maxfield was next reported at Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York, in the 1820 census, engaged in agriculture, head of a household that consisted of one man over 45 and one woman between 26 and 44.[9] He appeared next in the 1840 census at North Hero, an agriculturist with a household of one man and one woman, both in their 60s.[10]

The 1850 census reported Lifalet Maxfield, age 74, born at New Hampshire, no occupation, living with Andrew and Adelia Hazen, ages 28 and 25, and their children, farming at North Hero.[11] Eliphalet was probably related to the Hazens through his daughter-in-law. This is the last reference I have to this Eliphalet.

That same census, 1850, reported Polly Maxfield, 84, born Massachusetts, living at North Hero with Charlotte Hazen, 42, and numerous children.[12] Charlotte was Eliphalet's daughter-in-law's sister. If the death record is correct, Polly's age was miscalculated in the census. Polly Maxfield died at North Hero on 5 April 1860 from old age, her age being 86 years 1 month and 11 days, born at Barnstable, Massachusetts.[13]

Eliphalet Maxfield had the following child:

  1. probably NATHAN6 MAXFIELD b. at Connecticut abt. 1799.
