Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

ELIPHALET5 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Sandwich, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 22 July 1770[1] a son of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Lydia Jones. He died sometime after the 1860 census. He married at Sandwich on 3 October 1792 JUDITH ALLEY.[2] She was born at Sandwich about 1774-5 and died at Corinna, Penobscot County, Maine, on May 1860.[3]

Eliphalet grew up at Sandwich, the fourth of nine children; however the family also had some connections to Sutton, Caledonia County, Vermont. This younger Eliphalet took the Freeman's Oath at Sutton on 4 July 1794.[4] Eliphalet and Judith moved several times. They were reported at Sandwich in the 1800 and 1810 censuses, although the births of their children were recorded at Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, Maine, beginning in 1805. Census records placed the family at Mount Vernon in 1820, at Fayette, Kennebec County, in 1830, at Chesterfield, Franklin County, Maine, in 1840, back at Mount Vernon in 1850, and at Corinna in 1860. He was described as a miller in 1850, engaged in manufacturing or trade in 1840.

An Eliphalet Maxfield fought in the War of 1812. As there were three Eliphalet Maxfields of approximately the same age living in northern New England at the time, there is some confusion over which was the soldier in the War of 1812.

There is no conclusive evidence as to which Eliphalet Maxfield was the soldier. I will place the information here, with Eliphalet son of Eliphalet, believing that father and son would have wanted to stick together while in military service.

Eliphalet Maxfield the soldier enlisted on 2 March 1813, and again on 9 April 1814, and was discharged on 1 May 1815. He was a Private in Capt. H. Hale's Company of the 11th regiment of Infantry. Their operations were based at Greenbush, in Rensselaer County, New York. For a time they were at Sackett's Harbor, on Lake Ontario. Eliphalet was a farmer, 5' 5" tall, with blue eyes, light hair, and a light complexion.[5]

Two of Elphalet's sons also served in the War. Moses Maxfield (age 21, born Sandwich) enlisted in Col. Clark's company of the 11th Regiment Infantry on 10 February 1813. He spent some time in the hospital, but reinlisted on 23 February 1814. He left the hospital to rejoin his regiment on 2 April 1814. A corporal, he was wounded by a cannon shot at Erie and died at Buffalo on 29 August 1814.[6] Eliphalet Maxfield, Jr., enlisted on 7 March 1813 at Sandwich. He was described at that time as a farmer, age 16, born at "New Sutton," Caledonia County, Vermont, 5' 5 ½" tall, with black eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. He served in several different detachments of the 11th Regiment of Army Infantry, and was discharged from Sakett's Harbor on 21 or 23 May 1815.[7]

Census records before 1850 only listed the numbers of persons in a household of various age and sex categories. The census records for this family may be explained as follows:[8]

1800 Sandwich, NH
male 26-44 Eliphalet, 30
female 26-44 Judith, 25
male 0-9 Moses, 7
female 0-9 Dorothy, 5

female 10-14 Lydia, 13
1840 Chesterville, ME
male 70-79 Eliphalet, 69
female 60-69 Judith, 65

These census records explain some things, but leave many questions:

  1. A few near misses in estimating ages should not concern us. These include Judith in 1800, Moses in 1810, and Eliphalet in 1840.
  2. Asa Maxfield is included in the list below as perhaps a child of this family because the 1880 census called Dolly (Maxfield) Dudley his sister. However he does not appear to be present in this home at any time, which causes us to question his placement in this family.
  3. Eliphalet Maxfield, Jr., is absent from the 1820 and 1830 censuses, although he is not reported as head of a household in those censuses, and the first marriage of which we have knowledge was 1833. Where was he?
  4. In addition to Asa and Eliphalet, James, 17, and Elizabeth, 14, were both absent from the 1820 census. Where were they?
  5. According to the birth date we have for Lucy, she should have appeared in the 1810 census, and should have been ten years old in 1820, not 0-9. Could our birth date be in error? Also, she does not appear in 1830, although she did not marry until 1831.

The 1850 census reported Eliphalet Maxfield, 80, miller, and Judith Maxfield, 75, at Mount Vernon.[9] By this time their children and grandchildren had scattered across central Maine and beyond. James Quimby Maxfield, by 1850 on his fourth marriage, lived with three children at Mount Vernon; Sally (Ayers) Maxfield, widow of Dudley Maxfield, lived at Mount Vernon in a large household that included herself and three Maxfield children; Asa Maxfield was reported at Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut, in the household of Peleg and Almira A. Potter.[10] Dorothy "Dolly" (Maxfield) Dudley, lived at Readfield, Kennebec County, with her family as follows:[11]

Judith (Alley) Maxfield died at Corinna in May 1860. The following month the census reported Eliphalet Maxfield, 89, pauper, living at the Town Farm in Corinna.[17] This is the last record I have for this Eliphalet.

The 1870 census reported Dora Dudley, 71, keeping house, and Asa Maxfield, 65, farm laborer at Bradford, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.[18] The 1880 census reported Asa Maxfield, farmer disabled by dropsy, 74, and Dolly Dudley, 80, sister, keeping house, at Bradford.[19]

Eliphalet Maxfield, Jr. was reported in 1860 at Trenton, 62, farmer, with his wife, Elizabeth, 52, Martha J. Hodgkins, widow of one of his step-sons, 26, step children Benjamin P. 28, factory operative, and Augusta, 21, and probable grandchildren Seth J. Hodgkins, 5, Coleman F., 4, and Lizzie, 2.[20]. In 1870 Eliphalet, 73, and Elizabeth, 63, lived at Lamoine, Hancock County, with probable grndchildren Seth, 15, and Colman 14.[21] The 1880 Census reported Eliphalet, 85, and Elizabeth, 72, living at Lamoine with grandson Seth, 26, and his wife Annie, 21.[22] The 1900 Census reported widow Betsey Maxfield, 94, at Lamoine, with her grandchild, Seth, 45, his wife Anna, 41, and their children, Martha, 15, and Newell, 13.[23]

Concerning the birthplaces of the children of this family, the births of all except Moses and Asa were recorded at Mount Vernon, however census records gave the birthplaces of all the children through Lucy as New Hampshire. Recognizing that in compiling early New England vital records, bi Seth 15 and Coleman, 14.rth information was often collected after the fact, and that the family was still in New Hampshire in the 1810 census, these children are listed below as born at New Hampshire, probably at Sandwich.

Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Judith Alley had the following children:

  1. MOSES6 MAXFIELD b. at Sandwich about 1793; d. at Buffalo, Erie County, New York, on 29 August 1814 from wounds in war.[24]
