Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

JOSEPH5 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Sandwich, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 5 November 1783[1] a son of Eliphalet Maxfield and his wife Lydia Jones. He died probably before the 1850 census. He married as his first wife probably sometime before 1808 PHEBE ________. She was born about 1790 and died at Detroit, Somerset County, Maine, on 4 November 1849.[2] He married as his second wife at Tamworth, Carroll County, New Hampshire, on 26 April 1840 ABIGAIL WEEKS.[3] She was born at New Hampshire about 1806-7. She married as her second husband at Tamworth on 29 December 1850 JOHN R. WARD.[4]

Joseph Maxfield grew up at Sandwich, with possibly some time at Sutton, Caledonia County, Vermont, the ninth of nine children. Census takers found the family of Joseph Maxfield at Sandwich in 1810 and 1830, and at Tamworth in 1840. I have not found a record for 1820. The designations by age and sex, with some possible explanations, follows:[5]

1810 Sandwich
male 26-44 Joseph, 26
female 16-25 Phebe, 20
female 0-9 unidentified
1830 Sandwich
male 40-49 Joseph, 46
female 30-39 Phebe, 40
male 15-19 Jones, 17
female 15-19 unidentified
1840 Tamworth
male 50-59 Joseph, 56
female 30-39 Abigail, 33
male 10-14 unidentified
female 10-14 unidentified
male 5-9 Charles, 7

Joseph and Phebe could have had other children, we have not yet identified.

Joseph Maxfield married a second time nine years before his first wife died. The most likely explanation is that they divorced, however I have not yet found the record. Phebe's death was recorded in the 1850 census Mortality Schedule, at Detroit, as Phebe Maxfield, widow, born New Hampshire, age 69, died November [1849] from dropsey.[6] Her death is also recorded at the Detroit Village Cemetery, as Phebe Maxfield, wife of Joseph Maxfield, age 59 years, died 4 November 1849.[7] As 1810 and 1830 census records pointed to a birth between 1790 and 1795, the age recorded at the cemetery is probably the correct age. As one of these records called Phebe a widow, and Joseph did not appear in the 1850 census with his second wife, we can estimate that Joseph died some time between the conception of his last child (1841) and the death of his first wife (1849).

Joseph's second wife, Abigail, appeared in the 1850 census at Tamworth as head of a household as follows:[8]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation Birthplace Other
31 Abigail Maxfield 43 F NH
32 Hannah J. Maxfield 9 F NH school
33 Charles Maxfield 17 M farmer NH school

Six months later Abigail had remarried. I have no further record on Abigail (Weeks) (Maxfield) Ward.

Joseph Maxfield and his first wife Phebe, may have had the following children, perhaps others,:

  1. perhaps JONES6 MAXFIELD b. at New Hampshire on 16 March 1813.
  2. CHARLES6 MAXFIELD b. at New Hampshire abt. 1832-3.[9]

Joseph Maxfield and his second wife Abigail Weeks had the following child:

  1. HANNAH J.6 MAXFIELD b. at Tamworth on 1841.[10]
