JONES6 MAXFIELD (probably Joseph5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born in New Hampshire on 16 March 1813, probably a child of Joseph and PhebeMaxfield and died on 16 July 1896.[1] He first married an unidentified woman probably before 1834-5 (birth of a child). She died probably before 1849 (his second marriage). Jones Maxfield married as his second wife at Detroit, Somerset County, Maine, on 19 November 1849 MARTHA ANN DAVIS,[2] child of Silas Davis and Fanny Evans, who was born at Palermo, Waldo County, Maine, on 31 May 1832, and died at Stetson, Penobscot County, Maine, on 14 December 1911.[3]
The parentage of Jones Maxfield has not been proven. Because his first name was Jones, he was probably a grandchild of Eliphalet Maxfield and Lydia Jones, the only wife of a Maxfield with the surname if Jones in New Hampshire. A review of the census records for the sons of Eliphalet in 1820 and 1830 indicated that Joseph had a son not otherwise accounted for, born in this time period. The other sons of Eliphalet and Lydia, namely Eliphalet and Jacob, both had sons born the year of Jones' birth, and they have been identified as someone else.
Jones Maxfield was reported in the 1840 Census at Palmyra, Somerset County. The family consisted of a female in her 50s (unidentified), a couple in their twenties (Jones 27 and wife), and a female 5-9 years old (Eliza 5).[4]
When Jones married for the second time he was 36, she 17, and Jones' daughter by his first marriage was 14.
The family was reported at Detroit in the 1850 Census as follows:[5]

The 1860 census reported "James" and Martha Maxfield, a family of two, at Stetson. James, probably our Jones, a farmer, age 47, was born at New Hampshire. Martha, age 28, was born at Maine.[6]
The Jones Maxfield family was reported in LaGrange, East Bradford Post Office, Penobscot County, in the 1870 Census:[7]

The 1880 Census report of this family, in Stetson, Maine, more clearly defined relationships:[8]

According to this record, Martha had three children, one of whom was living. So she may have had two other children who did not live long enough to be reported in a census. David and Mary had been married fifteen years.
The 1910 census reported Martha N. Maxfield, 76, widow, living alone on Etna Road, Stetson. Of her three children, none were still living.[10]
