Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Fifth Generation

JONATHAN CARR5 MAXFIELD (Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Bradford, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 17 February 1809[1] a son of Currier Maxfield and his wife Mary Carr. He died at Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin, on 2 September 1890.[2] He first married at Newport, Sullivan County, New Hampshire on 2 July 1829 JUDITH CHENEY.[3] She was born at Goshen, Sullivan County, on 5 June 1805 and died near Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin, on 6 April 1846.[4] He second married at Evansville on 10 July 1847 ANNA (ALLEN) BAKER.[5] She was born at Pennsylvania on 6 July 1801 and died at Plover on 13 April 1873.[6] He third married at Lind, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, on 30 April 1874 SARAH (MccLENNAN) JAMES.[7] She was born at New York on 30 March 1817, a daughter of Robert D. and Hannah (Taggart) McClennan. She died at Plover on 19 September 1885.[8] He fourth married at Portage County on 13 December 1888 SARAH L. (PROUTY) CLENDERMING.[9] She was born at New York on 1823 and died at Stevens Point, Portage County, on 30 July 1899.[10]

Although Jonathan's birth was recorded at Fishersfield, later called Newbury, Hillsborough County, his parents were still living at Bradford at that time. His family of origin moved in time from Bradford to Fishersfield to Goshen. Jonathan was the fourth of nine children.

Jonathan Maxfield participated in a number of property transfers and mortgages in Sullivan County:

Jonathan C. Maxfield was a farmer all his life. He and Judith had five children, three of whom survived childhood. The 1840 census reported the Jonathan Maxfield family at Goshen, consisting of a man and a woman in their 30s (Jonathan 31, Judith 34), a boy between 10 and 14 (Almon 10), and a boy and a girl under 5 (Electa 2, Leander 1).[20]

The Jonathan Maxfield family moved West, to Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin, in 1844, according to Wright.[21] However, they had sold their land in Goshen in August 1841. On 23 June 1842 the New Hampshire state legislature removed Jonathan Maxfield from the office of Lieutenant in the light infantry of the 31st regiment of the state militia, stating he had moved away and neglected to resign.[22] So their westward move may have been between April 1841 and June 1842.

Wisconsin opened up to settlement following the Black Hawk War of 1832. It became a Territory in 1836 and a state in 1848. Jonathan and Judith and family first settled in Rock County, in southern Wisconsin. Judith died there in 1846. Fifteen months later Jonathan remarried. Jonathan and his new wife, Mrs. Ann Baker, each brought three children into their combined household. They moved to Portage County, and enjoyed twenty-two years of marriage before Ann died. A year after her death, Jonathan married Sarah (McClennan) James. After eleven years of marriage she died. Three years later, at age 79, Jonathan married his fourth wife, Mrs. Sarah Clenderming, age 63. Jonathan died two years later; Sarah lived another nine years after his death.

The 1850 census reported the blended family of Jonathan and Ann at the Town of Union, Rock County, as follows:[23]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation Birthplace Other
17 Jonathan Maxfield 41 M farmer NY real estate $800
18 Ann Maxfield 49 F PA
19 Almon Maxfield 20 M farmer NH
20 Electa Maxfield 12 F NH school
21 Leander Maxfield 10 M NH school
22 Martha Baker 14 F OH school
23 John A. Baker 11 M OH school
24 Wm M. Baker 9 M IL school

The 1860 census reported Jonathan and Ann at Stockton, Portage County. All of the children had left home except William, who was mistakenly recorded as William Maxfield.[24] Electa married in 1855 and lived in Plover. Almon was living with his sister,[25] and would marry the following year. Leander had found his way to Eagle Valley Township, Carson County, Utah, where he worked as a miner.[26] Jonathan and Ann were reported at Stockton in the 1870 census,[27] and Jonathan and Sarah were there in 1880.[28] Although Jonathan was appointed postmaster at Stockton on December, 1874,[29] he was still listed in the 1880 Census as a farmer.

Leander Maxfield disappeared from the records until he registered to vote at Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona Territory, on 6 October 1890. He described himself as a carpenter, 52 years old.[30] On 11 July 1896 he married at Bisbee, Mrs. Mary Ann Walker, child of Francis Hury. He was 57, she 42.[31] The 1900 census reported them at Bisbee:[32]

Line Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation Other
58 Maxfield, Leandro head W M Jan 1838 M ME ME ME carpenter owns home
59 Maxfield, Mary A. wife W F Jan 1850 M Ireland Ireland Ireland imm.1860
1 child/1 child living

The census indicated they had been married four years.

Leander and Mary Ann married again, at Bisbee, on 17 July 1902.[33] Perhaps they had gotten divorced in between?
