Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

CHARLES H.6 MAXFIELD (Enoch,5 John,4 Michael,3 John2-1) was born at Gilmanton, Strafford County, New Hanpshire, on 5 December 1830 a son of Enoch Maxfield and his wife Sarah Thompson. He died at Gilmanton on 17 April 1889.[1] He married at Gilmanton on 21 March 1865 MARIA S. PIERCE.[2] She was born at Gilmanton on 16 January 1846, a daughter of Henry J. and Mary E. Pierce. She died at Hillsborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 4 March 1908.[3] NOTE: The town of Gilmanton was transferred from Strafford County to Belknap County in 1840.

Charles H. Maxfield grew up in Gilmanton, the fifth of eleven children. As a young adult he farmed in various locations, none very far from his family home. The 1850 census reported him, age 18, a farmer, in the household of Jonathan and Olive Clough of Loudon, Merrimach County, New Hampshire.[4] The 1860 census reported Charles back with his parents in Gilmanton.[5]

Charles H. Maxfield was thirty-four years old when he married nineteen-year old Maria Pierce. Their new family was reported in the 1870 census at Gilmanton:[6]

This household was followed immediately by the farm of Charles' brother, Hiram Maxfield, who was followed, after two intervening farms, by their father Enoch Maxfield.

At some point in the next decade, Enoch Maxfield moved in with his son, or the other way around. This fuller three-generation family was reported in the 1880 census:[7]

All four children were attending school. The Hiram Maxfield household was reported next to this household.

In 1882 Enoch died. Son Walter married in 1885. In 1889 Charles died, age 58, from pneumonia.[8] He left Maria, a widow age 43, with children at home aged 19, 16, 14, and a new daughter age 2 months.

The 1900 census reported Maria (Pierce) Maxfield living with her son Herbert in Belmont, Belknap County. Also in the household were Maria's two youngest children, Horace and Charla, and Horace's new wife.[9] Maria died at Belmont in 1908, at the age of 62, from pneumonia.[10] By then all of her children were married, Charla having married in 1907.
