Descendants of John Maxfield

Sixth Generation

TRUMAN6 MAXFIELD (James5Richard4, Michael3, John2-1) was born at New Hampshire, about September 1821 a son of Jonathan Barnet Maxfield and his wife Mary Fellows. He died on 16 May 1880.[1] He married about 1843 CAROLINE ELVIRA BATCHELDER. She was born in the United States on 1 May 1822 and died on 2 March 1804.[2]

When Truman was about two years old, he moved with his family from New Hampshire to Potton in the Eastern Townships (Estrie Region) of Quebec. He remained in that area the rest of his life, farming as did his father. Caroline was born in the United States according to the 1861 census, but in Lower Canada (Quebec) according to the 1871 census. Perhaps she also came as a small child as part of the same movement of emigration that brought Truman to Canada.

The 1861 census reported Truman Maxfield, 38, living in a one floor one family frame house in Stanstead, Lower Canada (Quebec). The family included his wife Elvira, 40, son James, 7, attending school, and son Hernest, 2. Truman was a farmer. All members of the family were Baptist.[3] Their first child, Alma, was born in 1847 and died at the age of four, before the birth of James. "Hernest" is probably a mistake for Edwin.

The 1871 census reported the family at Hatley, Quebec:[4]

Line Name Sex Age Birth Religion Language Other
14. Maxfield, Truman M 49 USA Protestant English farmer; married
15. Maxfield, Elviry F 48 Quebec Protestant English married
16. Maxfield, James M M 17 Quebec Protestant English school
17. Maxfield, Edwin M 11 Quebec Protestant English school
18. Maxfield, Elmer M 8 Quebec Protestant English school

In the decade of the 1880s the family changed rapidly. Truman died in 1880. Son James died in 1881. Edwin married before 1881 and Elmer before 1885. The 1881 census reported Elmer living at Hatley, Quebec, with his wife and his brother Elmer.[5] I have found no further mention of widow Caroline Elvira in census records. She died in 1904. Truman, Caroline and James are all buried at McConnell Cemetery, Ayers Cliff, Estrie Region, Quebec.
