Sixth Generation

JAMES6 MAXFIELD (Jonathan,5 Richard,4 Michael,3 John2-1) was born at Potton, Brome County, Quebec, on 6 April 1833, a son of Jonathan Barnet Maxfield and his wife Mary Fellows. He died at Newport [Town], Orleans County, Vermont, on 5 December 1896.[1] He married at Newport, Orleans County, on 5 January 1857 CHARLANCY H. DAGGETT.[2] She was born at Newport on 17 March 1835, a daughter of Orville and Betsey (Kendall) Dagget. She died at Newport on 24 December 1913.[3]

James grew up on a farm at Potton, the sixth of six children. His parents were Congregationalists.

James Maxfield and family farmed in the Town of Newport. The 1860 Census reported James, 27, farmer, Charleny, 26, Olin, 3, and an unnamed male child, 3 months.[4] The 1870 Census reported James Maxfield, farmer, 37, Charlancy, 35, Oliver, 13, Omar, 10, and Carrie 6.[5] The 1880 Census reported the complete family:[6]

The farm hand, and all of the children except Olin, had attended school in the past year.

On 3 March, 1874, the family's house, barn and horse barn burned down. According to a news report, "The fire caught from smoking bacon under the shed."[7] A couple of years later James Maxfield had an altercation with a neighbor:[8]

James Maxfield, a highway surveyor on the lake shore, requested Clark Hunt a few days since, to take down his fence to prevent the snow from drifting the road, but Hunt refused to comply. By instruction received from the selectmen, Mr. Maxfield commenced to take down the fence when Hunt appeared on the stage of action and began to kick and cuff Mr. Maxfield, but he quickly retaliated by disfiguring Hunt's visage with a nail hammer.

Orleans County Monitor, 18 February 1878

On 6 October 1879 the Monitor reported, "James Maxfield on the Lake road is erecting a new set of buildings to replace those lately destroyed by fire."[9]

In the decade of the 1880s the children were marrying and leaving home. Omar married in 1883, Carrie in 1885, and Olin in 1886.

Son Ernest married in 1892, and following the Death of James, widow Charlancy lived with Ernest, as reported in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.[10]
