Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

DANIEL HUNTOON6 MAXFIELD (Samuel,5-4, Michael,3, John2-1) was born at Gilmanton, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 28 April 1816, a son of Samuel Maxfield and his wife Betsey Huntoon. He died at Belmont, Belknap County, New Hampshire, on 9 April 1904.[1] He married about 1839-40 SARAH DIAMOND SHAW.[2] She was born at Loudon, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 28 July 1818, a daughter of Theophilus and Mary Shaw. She died at Belmont on 1 April 1901.[3]

Daniel and Sarah never moved very far, in spite of the numerous place names in the above paragraph. Gilmanton, origionally part of Strafford County, was transferred to Belknap County in 1840 when that county was formed. The northwest part of Gilmanton, organized as Upper Gilmanton in 1859, was renamed Belmont in 1869. The Town of Loudon, which adjoins Gilmanton, was transferred from Rockingham County to the newly created Merrimack County in 1823. So a change of address does not mean a change of location.

Daniel grew up, the eldest of six children, in Gilmanton, where his father farmed. I have not found a marriage record for Daniel and Sarah. The 1900 Census states that they had been married for 60 years, which would place their marriage about 1839-40. However the 1840 Census implies that Daniel was still at home with his parents. Their first child was born in 1842.

The 1850 Census reported Daniel H. Mackfield, 34, farmer, at Gilmanton with his wife Sarah D., 35, children Mary E., 6, Sarah A., 4, and Susan C., 1. Also in the household was Daniel's father, Samuel, 67, a stone cutter.[4]

The 1860 Census reported this family at Gilmanton (Upper Gilmanton Post Office) with all their living children:[5]

23. Isaiah Maxfield 5 M NH
24. Ira H. Maxfield 2 M NH
25. Samuel Maxfield 63 M farmer $ 1000 $ 500 NH

Sarah, Susan, Daniel and Isaiah had all attended school in the past year. Mary's age was recorded incorrectly; she was 16.

By the time of the 1870 Census, Mary had married, and Sarah and Susan had moved out to work in textile mills. That census recorded the family at Belmont consisting of Daniel, 54, farmer, Sarah 54, keeping house, Dana, 17, attending school, Isaiah, 15, attending school, and Ira, 13, attending school. The household also included Lizzie McAllister (Mary Elizabeth Maxfield), 26, and her husband, Ira McAllister, 27, a carpenter, married in September 1869.[6] Sarah Maxfield, 24, was living in a boarding house at Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, and worked in a cotton mill.[7] Susie M. Maxfield was living in a boarding house in Belmont and worked in a hosiery mill.[8]

Sarah and Susan both married the following year. Dana Daniel married about 1877-8, and Ira married in 1879. However the 1880 Census reported Dana and Ira still at home, with their wives:[9]

By the time of the 1900 Census only Dana and his wife remained at home. That census reported the family at Belmont consisting of Daniel H. Maxfield, 84, farmer, wife Sarah D., 84, son Dana D., 47, farm laborer, and daughter-in-law Anna M., 44. That record also indicated that Daniel and Sarah had been married 60 years, and Dana and Anna had been married 22 years. Sarah had seven children, six of whom were living; Anna had no children.[10] Ira, 42, lived at Concord, Merrimack County, with his wife Sadie, 38, and their daughter Idella, 17. Ira was a locomotive engineer.[11] Isaiah Maxfield, 45, was reported at the New Hampshire asylum for the Insane, where he was listed as a farm laborer.[12]

Daniel Maxfield wrote his will on 26 September 1900:[13]

In the name of God, Amen. I, Daniel H. Maxfield of Belmont in the County of Belknap, State of New Hampshire, considering the uncertainty of life, but being of a sound and perfect mind and memory, do make publish and declare this my last will and testament, hereby disposing of all my worldly estate.

Second - I give and bequeath my daughter, Mary E. McAllister wife of Ira McAllister of Boulder, Colorado, the sum of one hundred dollars.
Third - I give and bequeath my daughter Sarah A. Dole, wife of George M. Dole of North Chelmsford, Mass., the sum of one hundred dollars.
Fourth - I give and bequeath my daughter Susan M. Morrison, the late wife of Asa C. Morrison late of Belmont N. H., the sum of one hundred dollars.
Fifth - I give and bequeath my son Ira H. Maxfield the sum of one hundred dollars.
Sixth - I give and bequeath my son Isaiah Maxfield, the sum of one hundred dollars.
Seventh - I give bequeath and devise to my son Dana D. Maxfield all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real personal and mixed and wherever found to situate and of whatever kind or nature To have and to hold the same to him and his heirs and assigns forever, provided he the said Dana D. Maxfield shall support and maintain on my Homestead farm in Belmont, or at such other place as may be mutually agreed upon, my beloved wife Sarah Maxfield during her natural life, and at her decease shall see that she is properly buried and suitable gravestones erected to her memory, meaning and intending that my said wife Sarah Maxfield shall have the same rights and care as she now has while I am living.

Daniel Maxfield remembered all of his children, and the will indicates where the daughters were living. Son Dana, who continued to live on the farm, was given special consideration.

Daniel's wife, Sarah, died six months after he wrote his will, from chronic consumption.[14] Daniel died in 1904 from senile gangrene.[15]

Daughter Mary Elizabeth's obituaries, found at Find a Grave. fill in more details of her life:[16]

Four Sons of Mrs. McAllister Will Bear Loved Mother to Columbia Cemetery.
Lizzie M. McAllister, wife of I. T. McAllister, died at 2:30 Sunday morning, surrounded by loving husband and children. She had been ill since February last with neuritis, complicated with hardening of the arteries, and her death was not unexpected. For 48 hours prior to her passing away she lay in a comatose state and knew none of those who hovered tenderly about her.
Mrs. McAllister came to Boulder in July, 1877, following her husband, Boulder's lumberman, who arrived here in February of that year, bringing her sons, Dan and Milo, with her. Other sons, born in Boulder, are William W. and Ray E. McAllister. Dan and Milo were born in Lebanon, N.H. These four sons, prominent business men of Boulder, will be pallbearers at the funeral at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The funeral will be private because of the quarantine. Rev. Dr. C. A. Rowand, pastor of the M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] church, will conduct the service. All her life Mrs. McAllister was a devoted Methodist and the family were large contributors to the fine church edifice.
Mrs. McAllister was a woman who was much loved and universally respected. She was born May 19, eighty-four years ago at Belmont, N.H. and married September 21, 1869.
Her sister, Mrs. Susan M. Morrison, of Belmont, N.H., came last June on account of her illness and was at her bedside till the end.

Daily Camera, Boulder, Colorado, 28 October 1918.

Mrs. McAllister Dies At Home in Boulder
Mrs. I. T. McAllister died at her home in Boulder last Sunday following an illness of many months duration. She was a former resident of Lafayette, and her husband conducted the lumber business at this place, later moving to Boulder where he enlarged his business and where the main offices of the McAllister Lumber & Supply company are now located. Mrs. McAllister was well advanced in years and death was due to the infirmities of old age. She is survived by her husband and the three sons. Funeral services were held in Boulder Tuesday.

Lafayette (Colorado) Leader, 1 November 1918

Her husband's obituaries also provide more information:[17]

Ira T. McAllister, Pioneer Lumberman, Dies at Home Here
Ira T. McAllister, for forty years leading lumber dealer in Boulder, died at 1:45 o'clock this afternoon at his home on Pine street.
Mr. McAllister had been feeble for a long time but critically ill for only a short period. The fundamental cause of a general break down was neuritis. He had been unconscious for thirty hours.
Mr. McAllister was born in Plainfield, N.H., February 8, 1843, and was married to Lizzie Maxfield, Sept. 21, 1869, in Belmont, N.H. They came to Boulder 45 years ago and were among the pillars of the substantial citizenship of the place. The lady died two or three years since, regretted by all, and Mr. McAllister occupied their home with his son Milo.
He retired as head of the McAllister Lumber & Supply Co. a few years ago and was succeeded by his eldest son, Dan E. McAllister, departments of the large business being conducted by two other sons, William W. and Milo. The youngest son, Ray E., is agent for the Edison photographs in this city.
From the small beginning of a sawmill in this city, the business developed until it included large lumber yards and hardware, coal and other departments. He was energetic, prudent and honorable in his dealings, and established a reputation and a business ably continued by his sons.
Mr. McAllister was a member of Boulder Lodge No. 45, AF&AM [Ancient Free and Accepted Masons], and held various office of honor and trust in that Masonic body.

Dana Daniel Maxfield appeared in the 1910 Census at Belmont, where he was described as 57 years old, a widower and a farmer. With him were Susan S. Prescott, 55, divorced, servant, and her probable niece Alice Prescott, 16.[19] Dana married Susan in 1920, and they were enumerated by the census taker on 28 January 1920 (four days after their wedding) as Dana D. Maxfield, 66, farmer, and Susie S. Maxfield, 65, wife, of Belmont.[20] Susie died in 1928. The 1930 Census reported Dana D. Maxfield, 77, widower, at Belmont, with no occupation.[21] The 1840 Census found Dana D. Maxfield, 86, widower, at the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord.[22] He died seven days after that census. He had no children.

Isaiah Maxfield, married in 1882, was divorced by his wife in 1897 for abandonment. He spent the rest of his life in the New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane at Concord. He evidently worked as a farmer at the asylum. The 1900 Census called him a farm laborer;[23] in 1910 and 1920 he was listed as a farmer;[24] the 1930 Census called him a patient.[25] He died in 1932 from arteriosclerosis. In his will he also mentioned Leon Morrison, nephew, of Merrimack, Hillsboro County; Margaret Watson, Gerrish, Boscawen, Merrimack County, grand-niece; Hilda Bennet, Gerrish, grand neice; Mrs. Sarah Dole, Gloversville, Fulton County, New York [sister], D. E., Milo, and Ray McAllister, nephews, Boulder, Colorado.[26]
